The Huntington High School Highsteppers are competing in the national championships in Florida this weekend.
This year’s Highsteppers’ squad is led by head coach Jessica Harris and assistant coach Jennifer Bendersky. The competitive dance team has been training since last summer. It performed at halftime of several football and basketball games and looked impressive in a handful of regional competitions leading up to this weekend’s national championships.
Huntington will be vying in the Dance Team Union Nationals at Gaylord Palms Resort in Orlando, Florida. The Highsteppers have been raising monies to help reduce the individual cost of the trip.
The Highsteppers making the trip to the national championships include freshmen Grace Colavecchio, Jillian LoTurco, Victoria Mangan, Ella Naima and Margo Nitekman; sophomores Hallie Armengau, Lainey Carney, Jordan Cook, Jailyn Fuentes, Alexa Rind, Kate Sheran and Katelin Smith; juniors Livia D’Anna and Mia Redick; seniors Sophia LaCentra, Casey Smith and Kaitlyn Smith
Sophia LaCentra and Casey Smith are the Highsteppers’ senior captains with Mia Redick serving as the team’s junior captain.
“While I'm very sad to see my last season of Highstepping come to a close, it could not have had a better ending,” Ms. LaCentra said. “I am extremely proud of the team, their hard work and their massive dedication. I have loved my years on the team immensely and I am so excited for nationals!”
