Huntington Class of 2019 member Luke Luckow is this year's Patrick McCourt Scholarship Award recipient.
“As our tribute to Patrick, this scholarship is awarded to a student who we feel embodies his spirit and legacy,” said Michael McCourt, who presented the 2019 award on behalf of his family during Huntington’s senior academic awards night in the high school auditorium. “I am pleased to report that thanks to the generosity of donors to our fund, we have been able to increase the award this year to $1,250. The McCourt family is grateful to the Rotary Club for allowing us to maintain this fund under its auspices.”
This year’s McCourt scholarship was awarded to Luke Luckow, who is headed to Penn State University where he intends to study communications. He has overcome family tragedy and thrived at Huntington High School, where he starred on the soccer and lacrosse teams.
Mr. Luckow is very highly regarded by his classmates and teammates. His personality is capable to lighting up a room and his enthusiasm for whatever he happens to be involved in at any given time is legendary. A valued friend, the teenager is always ready to help a member of his circle when they are in need.
“Patrick was a serious student, a quick wit, a true friend, a helpful neighbor and a responsible citizen; a young man of solid integrity,” said Mr. McCourt at the scholarship presentation ceremony. “Well-loved and admired, he is sorely missed by many.”
Patrick Thomas McCourt was born October 20, 1988. He was a popular figure around Huntington, performing in the marching band, serving as captain of the Blue Devil fencing team and participating in various school activities.
During his years at Huntington High School, Mr. McCourt was very well-liked and developed close relationships with a core group of friends, along with many others. He graduated from George Washington University, focusing his studies on civil engineering. He quickly found work in the field shortly after his college graduation.
In addition to his brother, Michael, Mr. McCourt was survived by his parents, Patrick and Mary and his sisters, Kiera and Meredith.
In the 2006 edition of The Huntingtonian, Huntington High School’s annual yearbook, Mr. McCourt’s photo appears on page 38, along with the senior quote he chose from comedian Steven Wright: “I intend to live forever. So far, so good.”
