Huntington junior Abby Maichin turned in a career day, tallying nine goals and two assists to lead the Blue Devil girls’ lacrosse team to a 17-7 victory over visiting Walt Whitman.
Huntington trailed early, 1-0 before going on a six goal run. Walt Whitman responded with their won six goal run to regain the lead, 7-6. The rest of the game belonged to the Blue Devils.
Abby was magnificent, scoring from a variety of positions on the field and sending laser-like passes to teammates. Marissa Stafford had two goals and three assists. Jordan Forte and Paige Lennon both scored twice and had an assist in the game. Alyssa Sorensen had a goal and an assist. Katie Browne also scored. Maya Santa-Maria recorded five saves in goal for Huntington.
Huntington Crew Team Sets Sail
The Huntington High School crew team is ready to set sail. The Blue Devils are one of the oldest and most successful such programs in the state. The rowers are coached by Anika Selle-Giehl and Sean Dunn.
The crew team’s roster consists of eighth grader Annika Galvin; freshman Eliza Walther; sophomores Maren Grosso, Lillian Joseph, Zadie Lauer and Alexa Rind; juniors Christopher Carmen, Paul Katigbak and Tyler Rund; and seniors Emma Farrell, Meagan Elise-Malone, Adriana Scarpati, Kelly Warren and Graham Young.
Blue Devils Nip Whitman in Tennis
The Huntington boys’ tennis team nipped Walt Whitman in league play, 4-3. The Blue Devils were carried to victory on the wings of Connor Dougal and Andrew Knowles’ 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win in No. 3 doubles.
Finley Softball Ready to Swing
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School softball team is ready to hit the ball out of the park. The squad is coached by Blue Devil veteran Nancy Conlon.
Finley’s team consists of seventh graders Adriana Abbatiello, Layna Abraham, Kathryn Barba, Brooke Farasciano, Natalia Hernandez, Jessica Maixner, Damaris Mani-Munoz, Andrea Martinez-Posantes, Ruby Meidenman and Lily Tierney; and eighth graders Mackenzie Ahern, Nadeera Ali, Kenya Baker, Devon Boyle, Ella Kamenstein, Allison Malone, Gabriella Miller, Leah Sheran and Haileigh Smith.
Finley will play a 10 game schedule against Commack-Gold, Kings Park-White, Candlewood, Commack-White, East Northport, West Hollow, Stimson, Elwood, Hauppauge and Northport.
H-ton Boys’ Track Tops Undefeated Copiague
The Huntington boys’ track and field team toppled host Copiague from the ranks of the undefeated as the Blue Devils flew past the Eagles, 89-52.
Huntington (4-0) was dazzling in the sprints, distances, relays and field events. Anthony Joseph won both the 300m and 400m runs, but that was just the start of the impressive show that the Blue Devils put on for the crowd.
“I did great,” said Isaiah James, who notched a personal back in the 1600m run to capture first place with teammate Justin Stevens finishing second. James then came back and won the 800m run. “The races were back to back,” he said. “It wasn’t easy.”
Gary Barash won the discus and placed second in shot put. Johnathan Smith won the long jump with a leap of 21-11 feet.
Eric Sands reached a milestone for a Huntington thrower. “He’s one of a very few to toss the shot an amazing 51-10 feet,” Blue Devil head coach Ron Wilson said.
Finley Boys’ Tennis Ready to Ace Opponents
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School boys’ tennis team is ready to ace its opponents this spring. The squad is coached by Eric Mininni.
The roster includes seventh graders Jake Amend, Raymond Cumella, Benjamin Edgar-McNerney, Lars Galvin, Tyler Godin, Dominic Roldan, Jake Schmitt, Eli Soric, Jackson Stollmack, Andrew Sullivan and Chase Williams; and eighth graders Roman Borovica, Jeffrey Garcia-Cabrera, Vincent Grassi, Timothy Kusterbeck, Gavin Lefebvre and Logan Toth.
Finley has matches scheduled with Oldfield, Nesaquake, Accompsett, Northport, Commack, Stimson, East Northport, Elwood, Hauppauge and Bay Shore.
Alum Fiona Geier Notches 500th College Lax Save
Fiona Geier has enjoyed a great four years as the American University women’s lacrosse team’s goalie. The Huntington High School Class of 2015 alum recently recorded her 500th career save in the cage. In four years she has started all 59 games in which she has played and stopped 503 shots.
Ms. Geier is pursuing a major in health promotion and a minor in business. She is set to graduate with a bachelor’s degree next month. She will be returning to American University in the fall to begin work on a master’s degree in health promotion management. She expects to earn the graduate degree in May 2020.
Besides playing on the Blue Devil varsity girls’ lacrosse team, Ms. Geier was also a member of Huntington’s varsity fencing team. She participated in Huntington’s Relay For Life and traveled to Alabama with the high school’s Habitat from Humanity club.
Ms. Geier owned a 96 academic grade average in high school. She was a member of Huntington’s National Honor Society chapter as well as the Spanish Honor Society.
Pat Durand Leads Huntington to Near Upset
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team came close to upsetting visiting Riverhead, but fell just short, dropping a 9-7 verdict at Blue Devil Stadium.
Pat Durand had two goals and two assists. Billy Burton and Jack Krisch also scored two goals each. Jordan McCoy also scored in the game. Johnny Tucker and Nick Mattio had one assist each. Aedan McDonald stopped seven shots in goal.
Durand Ties It; Smith Wins It
Robbie Smith scored the game winning goal in overtime to lift the Huntington boys; lacrosse team to a 13-2 victory at Sachem East.
The Blue Devils trailed 8-7 at halftime before rallying to tie the game and force overtime on Pat Durand’s fifth goal of the game with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Durand also added two assists. Billy Burton had two goals and an assist. Jordan McCoy also scored a goal and added an assist. Dan Danziger, Liam Hassett, Jack Krisch and Luke Luckow also scored goals in the game.
Huntington goalie Aedan McDonald made nine saves.
Blue Devils Qualify for Nationals
The Huntington varsity boys’ track team’s fast times at the Knight Time Invitational at Uniondale qualified the Blue Devils in a pair of national events.
“Our sophomore 800m sprint medley relay team consisting of lead leg Anthony Joseph (200m), second leg Jason Turner (100m), third leg Nasir Youngblood (100m) and anchor leg CJ Kiviat (400m) ran an amazing time of 1:34.82, winning gold and breaking the sophomore meet record of 1:37.98 set back in 2010 by Half Hollow Hills West,” said Ronald Wilson, Huntington head coach. “The time qualifies them for the relay at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Greensboro, North Carolina.”
Huntington also qualified Turner (100m), Joseph (200m), Kiviat (300m) and Justin Stevens (400m) in the Swedish relay for the national championships. The Blue Devils finished second in the Knight Time Invitational to Uniondale in a time of 1:59.68.
