“I choose North Carolina State because of their esteemed reputation, especially in veterinary medicine,” Ms. Sage. “They are one of the top veterinary schools in the nation. The animal science and agriculture undergraduate programs are exceptional. They have so many classes and majors to choose from that I’m having trouble just sticking to one. Finally, the atmosphere is incredible. This was the only university I could truly picture myself on campus in the fall. From sports to clubs to academics, NC State has it all.”
The Huntington senior narrowed her choices to three schools in the final stages of her decision-making process: Purdue University, the University of Georgia and North Carolina State.
“I was accepted into nine universities so it was a really difficult decision,” Ms. Sage said. “They were all great research institutions and had everything that I wanted, but after visiting the NC State campus, I knew it was the one.”
Ms. Sage traveled to Thailand last summer with Loop Abroad, an organization that specializes in veterinary service programs. The Huntington teenager was picked to be among a small team of volunteers that worked for a week with rescued elephants at a sanctuary and later spent a second week caring for dogs at a shelter.
“I plan on majoring in animal science on a pre-vet track,” Ms. Sage said. “I also want to become involved with entomology; possibly beekeeping. I can’t wait to join animal and service related clubs, as well as continuing to play field hockey on an intramural or club team. I am also super excited attend football and basketball games and show off some Wolfpack pride.”
A member of multiple high school honor societies, Ms. Sage intends to use her undergraduate studies as preparation for veterinary school. “I hope to graduate a year early from NC State and transition into my graduate studies for veterinary medicine,” she said.
Huntington Class of 2019’s treasurer in each of the past four years, Ms. Sage has been president of the high school’s Latin Honor Society chapter for as both a junior and senior. She has also been a member of multiple academic societies and a variety of after school clubs.
“I will always remember the support of all my teachers at Huntington High, who go above and beyond in trying to help their students,” Ms. Sage said.
