The Huntington High School girls’ volleyball team played well over the weekend at an invitational tournament at Cold Spring Harbor. The Blue Devils reached the semifinal round before being turned back by Suffolk power Northport.
“We did well and everyone got a lot of playing time,” head coach Lauren Visbal said. “It was nice to see the non-starters rise to the occasion and get some experience on the court.”
Huntington held its own in pool play before edging Carle Place in the playoffs to advance to face No. 1 Northport. “We fought hard, but fell short of the win,” Visbal said. “Northport went on to win the tournament. We will have a rematch with them when we go to their tournament on October 6.”
During each pool play game a player who shined was awarded a medal by the opposing team. Medal recipients for the Blue Devils included Cat Jamison, Maddie Reed, Shannon Kehoe, Caroline Lenze, Izzy Toscano and Kiara Gelbman.
The Huntington roster also includes Shaye O’Beirne, Peyton Kalb, Grace Heuwetter, Steli Vlahos, Marina Durand and Sophia Severine.
During one match, Jamison leaped high above the net and hit a ball straight down inside the ten foot line, which “left everyone in awe,” Visbal said. “I was amazing.”
All things considered, the Blue Devils were pleased with how they played on Saturday. “It was a great day for the whole team,” Visbal said. “We all also supported Miles [Lerner], a Northport student who is recovering after being struck by a car by purchasing bracelets to help cover costs associated with treatment for his injury.” The team posed for a photo wearing the bracelets and had it sent to him.
