The Huntington varsity golf team cast aside very challenging playing conditions and turned in a great performance at the Section XI Conference I Championships at Rock Hill Golf and Country Club in Manorville.
There was plenty of pressure when golfers representing the 11 competing League I and League II schools teed off. The competition served as the county team and individual qualifier.
Longtime Huntington High School varsity golf coach Michael Marinello.
“Huntington had great day as the team rallied to take third place in the conference, which qualified the Blue Devils for the Section XI Championships,” said Michael Marinello, Huntington’s longtime head coach.
The Blue Devils were ready for however the ball bounced or dropped. Patrick Sclafani and Jack Giamo both shot an 87. Kyle Colleluori tallied an 89. John Lourenso and Joe Sclafani both carded in with a 92. Jack Monahan had a 110.
“Conferences went great,” Patrick Sclafani said. “The team played very well in cold conditions and all of the practices paid off after having a rough end of the season. I’m proud of everyone’s hard work. Our whole team gets to go back on Monday for the counties. Five out of our six starters qualified individually, getting us in the top three out of 11 teams.”
It’s not easy to play golf when it is cold outside. “There were frigid temperatures and the greens were so fast and undulating that it wasn’t fair to the players,” Marinello said. “To say that conditions were challenging today would be an understatement.”
The Suffolk championships are set for Monday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 31 at Rock Hill.
