Huntington High School’s Safe Halloween program offers all the desired fun associated with the day, but without any of the worry for parents. The annual event is sponsored by the school’s student government organization and the participating teenagers go out of their way to bring smiles to the faces of the participating youngsters. This year’s program will be held on Wednesday, October 31 from 4–6 p.m.
Open to any Huntington School District student from pre-school age through sixth grade, Safe Halloween provides youngsters with an opportunity to come to the high school dressed in costume and participate in Halloween related fun activities and games. It has a long tradition at the school and a storied history of making kids happy.
High school students serve as hosts for the younger children, who are restricted to certain areas of the building and provided with refreshments during the program. Organizers say that cute costumes are the norm and teachers have commented on how refreshing it is to see the teenagers interacting and catering to the youngsters. There will be games, candy, dancing, cupcake decorating, a haunted house and other fun activities that children are sure to enjoy.
Student government members representing all four grade levels will be assisting with the festivities along with the high school’s Ready Step team, Grandfriends club, Habitat for Humanity, Italian Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Et Cetera literary magazine, A World of Difference club, GSA, environmental club, robotics team, United Amigos and Art Honor Society. The Cannon Co. is sponsoring the event.
Children participating in Safe Halloween must be accompanied by either an adult or an older sibling. There is no admission fee, but the student government asks participants to bring one item of canned or boxed food, which will be used to jump start the high school’s Thanksgiving food drive.
Many high school clubs and honor societies are joining the student government in helping to stage the event. The teenagers who are helping out will offer participating children all sorts of fun experiences.
Past Safe Halloween events have featured ghastly goo, paper airplanes and coloring, robot demonstrations, singing and crafts, cookie decorating, bean bag toss, t-shirt design, Limbo and fun, fake tattoos, a mini-haunted house and face painting, “ghoulish surprises” and even a large-scaled haunted house. Games have included “pin the brain on Frankenstein” along with “dirty worms” and other “grisly” experiments.
