Mia Breitbarth is one of a kind. There’s no one else quite like the Huntington High School senior. She is confident and competitive, but the sweet teenager is always willing to put aside her own interests and help someone in need.

Ms. Breitbarth plays singles for the Blue Devil varsity tennis team and there is no doubt that when she takes to the court she plays to win. She enjoys a good challenge and likes to test herself. But she doesn’t take anything too seriously and her sense of humor can match that of any classmate.

A strong student, the teenager is a member of Huntington’s National Honor Society chapter. “We plan on doing a lot more hands-on activities this year,” said Ms. Breitbarth about the organization. She has also been inducted into the English Honor Society and is a contributing member of the high school’s Interact Club.

Ms. Breitbarth’s academic schedule includes classes in Advanced Placement Government and Politics, AP Literature and Composition, AP Environmental Science, Economics, Pre-Calculus and Virtual Enterprise.

The senior’s closest friends are Maire Brown, Brooke Goldsmith and Madison Buchholtz. Ms. Breitbarth’s has especially high regard for teachers Paige Tyree Furman, Camille Tedeschi and Maria Canino.

“Even though he’s not a ‘teacher,’ Mr. [Robert] Gilmor is my favorite and has meant so much to me,” Ms. Breitbarth said about the high school dean. She’s especially quick-witted and she hold strong opinions and isn’t bashful about expressing them.

“I love Mia,” Ms. Tedeschi said. “She is so much fun. Mia is unique, courageous and special. She is a charismatic young woman who works hard to achieve her goals and to maintain a high level of success in all that she does. I had the opportunity to teach Mia and travel with Mia and also work with her on a variety of activities since she is a devout member of the Interact Club. I truly adore Mia and look forward seeing all of her future achievements.”

The teenager has traveled to Hungary, Austria the Czech Republic and Poland as well as Paris, France and Rome in Italy. “I really want to go to Greece and London,” Ms. Breitbarth said.

Regardless of where she happens to be in the world at any given time, Ms. Breitbarth’s confident and outgoing personality shines through. “I don’t know if I see myself staying in Huntington based on the career path I want to take and the places I want to go to school,” she said. “I’d love to live in Washington, DC when I’m older. It’s my absolute favorite city.”

While Ms. Breitbarth’s mom grew up in and attended high school in Oyster Bay and her father is from New Jersey, she is Huntington through and through and she has loved attending high school here. “It’s been the greatest,” she said. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything. There really is no other high school I would rather go to and I truly mean that. I love Huntington so much. I’ve had the best time.”

Ms. Breitbarth is still in the process of determining which college she will be attending. “My top choices are Ohio State, Maryland and Syracuse,” she said. “I really want to go into the sports industry focusing on the business aspect of things and these schools happen to have programs that fit that.”

The teenager always has a spring in her step, even as she nears the finish line of her time in high school. Ms. Breitbarth is enjoying each day while she also looks ahead to college and a future career.

“Mia is a sweet, kind-hearted kid who is very mature for her age,” Ms. Canino said. “Her good character allows her to be a positive role model for her peers and have good relationships with anyone she comes in contact with. Mia is someone who is always willing to help, always willing to listen to someone in need and is always putting others before herself. She is a person who will do a lot in this world because of who she is, her determination to succeed and her willingness to put others first.”

In the remaining months of her senior year, Ms. Breitbarth is determined to continue making her mark and excelling academically. She has grown by leaps and bounds since her first day of kindergarten at Washington Primary School and soon she will move on to the next phase of her life more confident than ever before.

“Mia is one of those rare people that is both creative and logical,” Mrs. Furman said. “She sees the big picture and is a true visionary, yet she’s able to focus on the necessary details. I think it'll help make her an incredible businesswoman, if she decides to go that route. Mia is mature, smart, and well-liked by everyone that knows her. She will be a success no matter what she ends up doing.
