Flower Hill Primary School will never be outdone by any other. So second graders did their part in recognizing just how special America’s veterans are.
The second graders showed their community spirit by creating more than 80 thank you posters for local veterans. The gorgeous artwork will be displayed in storefronts along Main Street and New York Avenue in Huntington village.
Teacher Tiffanie Kelly has been doing a Veterans Day project with her class and her grade level colleagues' classes for about 15 years. “It’s a great way to learn about Veterans Day and give back to the veterans in our community for their service,” she said. “Many of the local merchants look forward to seeing the students’ posters each year.”
The posters were welcomed by shopkeepers last weekend. “They really came out so great and the merchants really were so grateful to receive them,” Mrs. Kelly said.
A member of Huntington High School’s Class of 1992, Mrs. Kelly has been a member of the district’s faculty since 1997. She obtained an undergraduate degree at Towson State University and a master’s degree at Long Island University. After student teaching in Maryland she worked in that state for a year before returning to Long Island and Huntington.
Mrs. Kelly taught at Jefferson Primary School for two years and then for 18 years at Southdown Primary School. This is her first year at Flower Hill. She has taught grades 1-4 during her career.
A member of the Highsteppers competitive dance team when she was a Huntington High School student, Mrs. Kelly later coached the Highsteppers.
Flower Hill has always been a patriotic place. Over the years it has been visited by men and women in uniform on both active duty and those in retirement. Flag Day ceremonies have been held and many other special events that have allowed students to express their love for America.
Veterans have always claimed a special place in Flower Hill’s collective heart. That same tradition continues today. Mrs. Kelly intends to keep it that way for a long time to come.
