Eighth grader Kathryn Montefusco is headed to the state swimming championships at Ithaca College after setting a new Huntington High School record in the 100 breaststroke.
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School student has excelled on the Blue Devil varsity team. “Kathryn chased the state cut time for the 100 breaststroke all season and nailed it at the League Championships,” Huntington head coach Chris Helmke said. “We look forward to a great performance at Ithaca next week.”
Montefusco captured All-League honors in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay and All-County recognition in the 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay. The dynamo placed in the top three in Suffolk in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.94.
Freshman Caelan Clayton also turned in a spectacular performance, garnering All League honors in the 200 medley relay, 200 IM, 100 Butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay.
“Kathryn Montefusco and Caelan Clayton have made their mark on Huntington varsity swimming this year,” said Helmke, who is assisted by Meg McConnell. “These two dedicated, hardworking athletes achieved personal best times at the league and the county championships.”
The two Blue Devils kicked off their season last August for three weeks of outdoor training with the rest of their teammates. The squad moved indoors to the Huntington YMCA pool in September and a series of dual and invitational meets followed a few weeks later.
The New York State Swimming & Diving Championships are set for Friday and Saturday, November 16-17 at Ithaca College.
