The Julian Watts era opened in winning fashion for the Huntington boys’ varsity lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon as the Blue Devils downed visiting North Babylon in the new head coach’s first game, 12-7.
Huntington led 5-0 after the first period and 8-2 at halftime. Freddie Amato paced the Blue Devils with five goals and two assists. Mike Abbondandelo, Colby Martin and Jon Koumas had two goals each. Luke Luckow also scored in the game. Pat Durand added five assists. Martin and Jordan McCoy also tallied assists. Goalie Sam Bergman stopped 11 shots in the cage.
Luke Eidle Stars in H-ton’s Victory
The Huntington baseball team picked up its first victory of the season, nipping visiting North Babylon on Wednesday afternoon, 3-2.
Huntington scored three times in the bottom of the second inning and made the lead hold up. North Babylon rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to pull to within one run, but the Blue Devils held off the comeback attempt.
Luke Eidle was the star of the game. The senior belted out a single and a double, drove in two runs and scored another and stole a base. He also hurled a complete game victory, giving up six hits and a walk and striking out seven over seven innings. The teenager threw 109 pitches, 76 of which were strikes.
Michael Marziliano, Jason Mora and Jonah Anastos also hits in the game. Anastos and Justin Italiano also scored runs.
Jack Flores Starts Rolling in Singles
The Huntington varsity boys’ tennis team won its season-opener. The Blue Devils nipped visiting Hauppauge, 4-3.
Huntington sophomore Jack Flores, the reigning Suffolk singles champion won in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Paige Lennon Scores Four Goals
The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team won its season opener against William Floyd, 14-2. Paige Lennon led the offense with four goals. Emma Greenhill, Abby Maichin and Isabella Piccola scored three goals each. Isabella Annuniziata also found the back of the cage. Sarah Agrillo had four assists. Piccola and Maichin also each picked up an assist.
Huntington’s goalies combined to stop seven shots with Megan Bacik recording four saves and Maya Santa-Maria tallying three saves.
The Blue Devils led at halftime, 7-2. Huntington scored seven unanswered goals in the second half. “It was a real team effort,” Greenhill said.
Boys’ Spring Track & Field Captains
The Blue Devil boys’ spring track and field season is underway. The team is once again coached by Ronald Wilson and Eli Acosta. Haidee Ganz-Bonhurst is consulting on the throwing events.
The captains for the spring season are sophomore Justin Stevens, junior Jonathan Smith and seniors Michael Drake, Clayton Jamison, Levi Leach and Brian Pierre.
Huntington will be busy during the spring break. The Blue Devils are participating in the Baldwin Frosh/Soph Invitational, East Meadow Invitational and Longwood Classic.
Jason Verville Wins in Straight Sets
The Blue Devil boys’ tennis team improved to 2-0 in Suffolk League II play with a 6-1 victory over Kings Park. Jason Verville led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 2 singles.
Varsity Baseball Scrimmage Goes Well
It was only a scrimmage, but the Huntington High School varsity baseball team’s performance at Cold Spring Harbor still left the Blue Devils feeling good.
Huntington scored in each of the first four innings. The Blue Devils banged out 14 hits during the scrimmage. Chris Segreti, Elian Pimentel, Luke Eidle, Kyle Colleluori, Justin Italiano and Aidan Bender collected two hits each.
Will Vollack scored three times and drove in a pair of runs. Eidle and Colleluori both had three RBIs. Italiano swiped two bases. Eidle, Colleluori, Italiano and Bender all doubled during the game.
Bender, Segreti and Anastos took turns on the pitcher’s mound. Bender hurled three perfect innings, holding Cold Spring Harbor both hitless and scoreless. The freshman fanned three and didn’t issue a walk. Segreti tossed one inning and struck out all three batters he faced. Anastos also pitched three innings. The junior surrendered three scattered hits and struck-out five.
Blue Devil Track Edges Riverhead
The Huntington boys’ track and field team had a very long ride on Wednesday afternoon. When their bus pulled into Riverhead, the Blue Devils disembarked, stretched and then went out and won the season-opening dual meet, 73-58.
Huntington’s highlights included Jonathan Smith winning the 400m hurdles and placing second in the long jump and triple jump. Anthony Joseph won the 200m and 400m dashes. Clay Jamison took first place in shot put and Michael Drake captured the high jump. Brian Pierre won the 110m high hurdles. The Blue Devils also won the 4x100m relay behind the team of Jason Turner, Anthony Joseph, Arkim Pierre and Jonathan Smith.
Segreti & Girimonti Win in No. 2 Doubles
The Huntington boys’ tennis team improved to 3-0 when it bested Walt Whitman on Wednesday afternoon, 5-2.
The highlight of the meet for the Blue Devils came when John Segeti and Matt Girimonti won in No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 7-5.
