Four Huntington High School girls’ basketball players have captured post-season honors. The Blue Devils concluded the winter campaign with an overall mark of 11-10 and a trip to the Section XI Class AA playoffs.

Senior Alexandra Heuwetter claimed All-League, All-Conference and All-County recognition. Abigail Machin, Nicole Leslie and Katie Seccafico were all named to the All-League team.

Huntington was coached by Mike Kaplan and Marissa Bergmann and captained by Heuwetter, Leslie and Seccafico. The squad included 10 underclassmen.

“This team was a pleasure to coach,” Kaplan said. “They truly were a family. I enjoyed every minute of helping them grow as basketball players and individuals. They improved tremendously since day one and I’m proud of them.”

Heuwetter led the team is scoring. Seccafico recorded the most steals. Leslie paced the team in rebounds. “All three captains were great leaders and contributed in many ways on and off the court,” Kaplan said. “They kept the Blue Devil tradition going.”

The roster also included a group of very talented underclassmen, including eighth grader Katie Browne, freshmen Jordan Forte, Charlotte Maggio and Julia Steinberg, sophomores Riva Bergman, Abby Maichin and Holly Wright and juniors Christie Baade, Paige Lennon and Alyssa Sorensen.

“We have 10 returning players,” Kaplan noted. “They are a solid core group who are a pleasure to coach.”

The Blue Devils appear poised to enjoy several strong seasons. The JV squad this past winter was sensational, turning in a 13-1 league mark. Coached by rookie sideline mentor Perry Marinelli, the 13-player team compiled an overall record of 16-4.

The JV roster included eighth graders Teddi Carnesi, Makaylah Frazier, Emily Plachta, Regan Sansiviero and Shaneek Shand; freshmen Alexa Amorison, Giavanna Devoe, Julia Gorecki, Kemberlin Hernandez-Veliz and Lisa Martin and sophomores and team captains Brooke Biernacki and Grace Heuwetter.

Kaplan completed his eighth season as Huntington’s head coach with a career record of 111-50. It puts him among the top active Suffolk coaches in victories. He has a winning percentage of .689 in 161 varsity games.
