The fifth and sixth graders at Woodhull Intermediate School are a proud bunch. They always keep their heads held high and they simply refuse to be outshined by anyone at any other school anywhere. This year’s science fair proves the point.
Woodhull students developed dozens of exceptional projects that ran the gamut of possibilities. Judging the work was quite difficult, even Herculean. Huntington’s Director of STEM Jill Johanson met with the youngsters and reviewed each of their projects individually, asking questions, probing procedures utilized and analyzing findings.
The two top projects on each grade level will advance to the Brookhaven National Lab’s annual elementary science fair set for May.
“We couldn’t be prouder of the projects that our students developed for this year’s fair,” Woodhull Principal Traci Roethel said. “Their work was spectacular and it was presented in an appealing manner. They did a very good job.”
First, second and third place awards were presented on each of Woodhull’s two grade levels.
Fifth grade honorees include:

Third place: Griffin Kanzer
Sixth grade honorees include:
First place: Lily Froggatt-Bale
Second place: Sophia Kaloudis
Third place: Benjamin Edgar-McNerney
The Brookhaven National Lab’s science fair is slated for Saturday, May 5 in Upton. It is expected to attract about 500 projects from Suffolk elementary school students ranging from kindergarten through sixth grade. One winner for each grade level will be awarded a medal and a banner, which can be hung in the school gym.
