Alexandra McKenzie knew it; she just knew it. When the Huntington High School senior stepped foot on the Ithaca College campus she was convinced it was the place for her. It’s where she feels she can accomplish her goals over the next four years.
“I applied to 22 schools and going into my senior year had no clue where I wanted to go,” Ms. McKenzie said. “Ithaca College was the second school I visited and as soon as I stepped on campus I knew it was the one. With Ithaca’s location, beautiful scenery and amazing opportunities, I believe it is the right fit for me. I want to major in health sciences with a minor in deaf studies.”
The teenager considered an assortment of schools, both large and small, “but nothing came close to what Ithaca College has to offer,” she said.

Ms. McKenzie has been a mainstay in the Blue Devil cross country and track and field programs as both a runner and pole vaulter. She’s very involved around the high school, participated in a host of activities and even starting the Actions against Opioids committee.
“Alliy is the type of person who looks out for everyone,” said junior Hadley Clayton, a close friend. “She does a lot for the community and the people around her. Whatever you need, she’s there, fun-loving, comforting and everything in between. I’m so proud to be her friend and ecstatic that she found her fit for college at Ithaca.”
The senior enrolled in nine courses this year, including Advanced Placement Psychology, AP Art and AP Environmental Science. “My dream is to become a pediatrician,” Ms. McKenzie said.
“Alliy is one of the sweetest, most thoughtful people I’ve met in Huntington High School,” senior Cailan Polishook said. “She’s extremely devoted to bettering the community and making a change.”
The teenager gets along with everyone, but she’s been especially close to high school physical education teacher and cross country coach Elizabeth Vogelsang and Dean of Students Robert Gilmor III.
“Alliy was one of the most trustworthy captains I’ve ever had,” Ms. Vogelsang said. “It was apparent that she displayed true leadership qualities and always went above and beyond in whatever task was given. Along with being a role model for her peers, her skill and work ethic always shined through in her running. I admire her so much and I can’t wait to see her thrive at the next level.”
Running for the Blue Devils during all three sports seasons and participating in the after school club program have been among the highlights for Ms. McKenzie’s high school years.
“Alliy has always been my shoulder to lean on and the best friend I’ve had,” said Bridgette Starr, a classmate and teammate. “She is a hard working girl who never gives up when the going gets tough. Words do not describe how proud I am of her. I know she will go on to do amazing things in the future.”
The teenager will never forget Huntington High School or the many happy days she spent within its walls. “My overall experience was definitely positive and has shaped me as a person,” Ms. McKenzie said. “I will always remember the amazing teachers and the friends I’ve made.”
Ms. McKenzie will be missed by Huntington’s teachers, coaches and club advisors. “She’s a special kind of kid,” Ms. Vogelsang said.
