Science enlightens. It inspires and captivates. It educates and motivates. Similar to their counterparts across the country and world, the youngsters that fill Jefferson Primary School’s classrooms each day love science, too.
This year’s Jefferson Science Fair featured projects that tested a hypothesis and ventured off into a variety of fields. Some of the work was downright fascinating. Most of the presentations were colorful in nature, both in the inks and papers that were used, but also in the style the experimental findings were explained.
The projects were evaluated by District Director of STEM Jill Johanson, who met with students to review their work. Projects were exhibited in the school gym. Classes toured through display during the school day and a large crowd of parents and family members turned out at night.
This year’s honorees include:
Overall Outstanding Project
Alexa Mazure - “Keep Your Teeth Healthy”
First place
Emma Boyle: “Oil & Water – Make it Mix
Liam LaVertu: “Cleaning Metal with Electrolysis”
Natalia Rodriquez: “It’s Gummies”
Jayden Rubio: “Carbon Dioxide Inflated Balloons”
Second place
Isabella Cruz: “Angle the Mirror”
Ruby Hoffman: “A Minty Mystery”
Lyric Martin - “The Penny Project”
Ms. Mazure will now advance to the Brookhaven National Lab’s elementary science fair on Saturday, May 5 and vie against other talented Long Island students.
“On March 14 we welcomed kindergarten through fourth grade parents to observe the presentations from our budding scientists,” Jefferson Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide said. “Students were articulate and very detailed during their presentations. Some of our students worked on their projects for the past three months. It was evident that the students who created individual projects were passionate about their topics. Thank you to Jefferson Primary School parents who supported our school-wide annual science fair.”
