Huntington High School’s Spanish Honor Society is an energetic group. It recently hosted a soccer tournament in the gym that drew 72 players and more than 200 spectators. The competition was fierce.
Teachers Nadine Araoz and Maria Gonzalez are the Spanish Honor Society’s faculty advisors and they couldn’t be prouder of the students who comprise the organization’s current membership.
The recent tournament featured a dozen teams composed of six players each. Two of the squads included female players. “This was a unique event because it was for both boys and girls and many students were from the ENL (English as a new language) population who typically are not as involved in extracurricular activities,” Ms. Araoz said.
The teams played rounds of six minute games. Team Districto and Team Adidas squared off against each other in the finals. In an absolutely thrilling contest, Team Adidas scored with just one minute remaining to claim the championship.
“It was a terrific event,” said junior Edgar Rivas Lizama, the Spanish Honor Society’s vice president who planned the entire tournament with help from 2016 Huntington alum Santos Garcia. “I had been planning it since the beginning of the school year. I organized it because most of the players were ENL students and this day was for them. It was something to make them happy and have fun.”
Mr. Rivas Lizama’s fellow Spanish Honor Society officers include Erick Joya-Amaya (president), Ariana Strieb (secretary) and Emily Mirón (treasurer).
The funds raised from the tournament will be used to support the Spanish Honor Society’s activities and mission.
