Three sensational seniors were presented with scholarships by the Huntington High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association after remarkable four year runs by each of the teenagers.

Niamh Condon, Amelia Maggio and Cynthia Ortega each won $500 scholarships. Ms. Condon is headed to Quinnipiac University to study for a career as a physician assistant. Ms. Maggio plans to study nursing in Pace University’s Honors College. Ms. Ortega will be attending Suffolk Community College.

PTSA President Nancy DiGiacomo spoke about each of the Class of 2018 members before a crowd of about 300 at the senior academic awards ceremony in the high school auditorium.

“The three recipients were chosen because they have shown academic improvement during high school and have demonstrated good citizenship and character,” Mrs. DiGiacomo said.

Ms. Condon enjoyed an incredible high school experience, playing on sports teams during all three season, serving as student government vice president, earning induction into six different academic honor societies and developing many wonderful relationships with classmates and teachers.

Ms. Maggio served as president of the high school chorus club and was an integral member of the drama club as one of its key actresses. An extremely talented vocalist, she achieved a “Level 6” NYSSMA placement.

Ms. Ortega is a very hardworking young woman. She has won several academic awards, performed with Huntington High School’s chamber choir, volunteered at Long Island Cares and worked part-time at Value Drugs.

Huntington High School’s PTSA is ready for the 2017/18 school year. Laura Cheshire (president), Debbie Chin (co-vice president), Alice Marie Rorke (co-vice president), Rene Babich (corresponding secretary), Denise Murtagh (recording secretary), Jennifer Walther (treasurer), Jeanie Dempsey (PTA Council delegate) and Dana Forte (PTA Council delegate) will serve on the organization’s executive board.
