Woodhull Intermediate School students are always happy to do a good deed. So this winter a group of youngsters is spending time during their lunch and recess period with building aide Peggy DeLaRosa and knitting hats for donation to St. Jude’s Research Hospital and to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
“The group started out with just Ms. Peggy, Charlotte Gordon and Deanna Elvir creating beautiful knitted caps, but soon more of their friends joined in,” Woodhull Principal Traci Roethel said. “Now there are six students looming away with Ms. Peggy. Charlotte and Deanna were joined by Josselin Escobar, Rachel Learned, Alisson L. Ramos-Panameno and Brooke Farasciano. Now all of these lovely young ladies are enjoying the experience.”
When Ms. DeLaRosa is asked about the six special students she beams with pride. “I love these girls,” the longtime district employee said. “They are so dedicated in making these hats. It is fun and we get to spend time together.”
The kids themselves are also enjoying the experience of working together to accomplish something meaningful. “Looming is fun and I love to make people feel better,” Ms. Elvir said. Ms. Farasciano is also sold on what she’s been spending her time doing. “I love giving back to less fortunate kids,” the youngster said.
Besides helping others, this shared hobby has had a positive effect on the girls’ overall attitude. “For happiness, I loom; so I do it day and night,” Ms. Learned said.
The girls look forward to getting down to work each day. “Looming is very fun and super easy and it makes me feel calm and happy,” Ms. Ramos-Panameno said
Recess has taken on a new meaning this year for the girls. “Looming makes me happy and in return, I love making other people happy,” Ms. Gordon said.
The good deed they are performing hasn’t been lost on the girls. “I love looming to help others,” Ms. Escobar-Morales said.
Mrs. Roethel is proud of the youngsters. “What a positive impact these Woodhull students have within our community,” she said.
