The Huntington girls’ basketball team won its ninth game of the season on Thursday afternoon, toppling host Newfield in Suffolk League III play, 52-23.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 20-6 first quarter lead and headed into halftime with a 32-8 advantage. Huntington went on to outscore their hosts in the second half, 20-15.
The victory improved the Blue Devils overall record to 9-7. Huntington is 5-5 in league play with four games remaining. The team needs seven league wins to earn a post-season berth.
Seniors Alexandra Heuwetter and Nicole Leslie provided Huntington with a powerful offensive punch against Newfield, combining to score 31 points. Heuwetter had three baskets from beyond the three-point arc and 16 points overall along with six assists. Leslie added 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Abby Maichin dropped seven points for the Blue Devils and Katie Seccafico and Alyssa Sorensen had four points and three points, respectively. Riva Bergman, Katie Browne and Jordan Forte each had two points. Christie Baade added a point from the free throw line.
Huntington hosts Smithtown East next Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. The Blue Devils then travel to North Babylon on Thursday (Feb. 1) for a 4 p.m. game.
The final week of the regular season will see Huntington play at home on Tuesday, February 6 against Centereach. The 5:45 p.m. tipoff will be preceded by a Senior Day ceremony honoring Heuwetter, Leslie and Seccafico. The last league game will be played at Copiague on Thursday, February 8 at 4 p.m.
“We need to keep playing as hard as we can,” head coach Mike Kaplan said. “We need to win at least two more games to reach the playoffs. That’s been our goal and everyone is working to accomplish it.”
