The Huntington School District’s adult education program has been offering residents interesting classes, workshops and seminars since the 1950s when the program was based in the high school building that once stood on Main Street and at Robert K. Toaz Junior High School on Nassau Road.
The program is still providing folks with dozens of offerings at five sites in the district. Spring classes begin the week of Monday, February 26. Online registration is now available through Turbo Roster at http://www.TurboRoster.com.
Registration is also available by mail or in the lobby of Huntington High School on Wednesday, February 7 from 6-9 p.m. (If inclement weather forces postponement of in-person registration, the make-up date is Wednesday, February 14.) Courses run for eight week blocks, unless otherwise indicated in the spring bulletin.
The line-up of spring courses includes American History, Basketball for Men, Bridge for Beginners, Chinese Calligraphy, Introduction to Ceramics, Chinese for Beginners, Cooking – The Art of the Dinner Party, Economics, ESL For Parents of ELL Students, French for Beginners, French for Intermediate, Hatha Yoga, How to Work with Google Drive, Introduction to Computers – Using Microsoft Word, Italian for Beginners. Italian for Intermediate, Knitting, Microsoft Office Advanced, Nutrition, Weight Loss and Wellness, Open Mixed Medium Painting/Drawing, Photography Lessons, Preparation for Citizenship, Co-ed Soccer (Indoor), Spanish for Beginners, Spanish for Intermediate/Advanced, Street Law, Stretch & Tone with Essentrics, Tai Chi Chi Kung, Watercolor and Zumba Gold.
Seminars include Friends & Families CPR and First Aid for Children, Getting Paid to Talk/ Making Money with Your Voice: An Introduction to Professional Voice Overs, How to Play for College Without Going Broke, Navigating the Medicare Landscape and Passport to Retirement.
Program Director Beth McCoy is always open to new ideas for additional program offerings. She encourages suggestions from those who would like to take a specific class or teach one.
Regular course fees are set at $15 for those residents aged 60 or over (except for those classes marked limited or no senior district), $55 for other district residents and $65 for those living outside the Huntington School District. Fees can vary based on the specific course and the duration of the class. (One day seminars can run as little as $20 for residents.)
There is also a two-night (Tuesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 12) auto insurance reduction course sponsored by the National Traffic Safety Institute and courses offered through Western Suffolk BOCES, including Adult Basic Education (GED) and beginner, intermediate and advanced level classes in English as a Second Language.
Course and seminar sites include Huntington High School, J. Taylor Finley Middle School, Woodhull Intermediate School, Jefferson Primary School and Southdown Primary School. Exact locations for individual offerings can be found in the program brochure.
The adult education program is self-sustaining. It is conducted primarily for adults in the community, but is open to those as young as 16 years of age wherever space exists, with the exception of basketball and where otherwise indicated.
