Jim Lauter loves to brag about his students. The Flower Hill Primary School second grade teacher enjoys sharing accolades and related good news. He was recently beaming with pride.

The longtime teacher is ready, willing and able to talk at length about any and all of his students, but most recently, he can’t say enough about Jeremy Romero Jaramillo, who won a writing contest sponsored by the Long Island Ducks.

“The contest was called Bring a Duck to School,” Mr. Lauter said. “Jeremy wrote an essay about his uncle to support the theme of choosing a local hero who has made a difference in his community. His uncle is a firefighter, who now lives in El Salvador.”

Representative of the LI Ducks are scheduled to be at Flower Hill on Monday, January 22 to honor Mr. Jaramillo. The festivities will run from 10-11 a.m. Huntington Fire Department members will also be on the scene and join in on the fun.

“The first half hour of the assembly will take place in the gym,” Mr. Lauter said. “The second half will be in our classroom. During the first half hour, the entire student body will be on hand. We’re expecting this to be a very special event.”

Mr. Lauter recently announced plans to retire at the end of June. A member of Walt Whitman High School’s Class of 1977, he obtained a BA degree at SUNY Brockport in communications/broadcasting. After working in the radio industry for several years, he enrolled at Adelphi University and earned a master’s degree in elementary education. He began substitute teaching in 1988 and became a full-time Huntington faculty member in September 1989. He has taught second, third and fourth grades. This is his 30th year as a teacher.
