Emma Greenhill is hoping to make her final season in a Blue Devil uniform her best. The Huntington High School lacrosse star is headed to James Madison University next fall, but first she’s hoping to lead her team deep into the playoffs this spring.

An upbeat, happy teenager, Ms. Greenhill has been a splendid athlete for the Blue Devils. She plays hard and gives her teammates and coaches everything she has on the field.

“I’ve been doing a lot to prepare for the season,” Greenhill said. “I go to training twice a week and Coaches [Kim] Gilroy and [Beth] Vogelsang have also been working with me. Most of the girls on the team are playing a sport so they’re keeping in shape that way, but for the girls who aren’t, we go to these workouts to make sure we’re ready for tryouts.”

The teenager is coming off a junior year that saw her tally 34 goals and 12 assists and capture All-County honors. The Blue Devils compiled a record of 9-8 last spring in Gilroy’s first season as head coach. The team reached the Suffolk Division I playoffs where it bowed to Riverhead in a thrilling game, 10-9.

Huntington has set its sights higher this year and Greenhill is expected to play a starring role for the Blue Devils. The season officially gets underway on Monday, March 5.

“Emma is always looking to improve herself,” Gilroy said. “She was chosen as a junior captain last year because of her spirit and positive attitude. Her energy on and off the field is a huge factor in our team’s success and she knows it. That is not an easy weight to hold on your shoulders, but Emma accepts the challenge with determination and focus. We are lucky to have her!”

Greenhill will once again play midfield for Huntington and she will also be taking the draw for the Blue Devils. “I have really high hopes coming into my last season of high school lacrosse,” she said. “We’re returning a lot of super talented girls and I know we are all willing to put in the work to win. I would really like to make it far into the playoffs and prove to the league that we’re a strong team.”

As the season draws closer and her high school days grow shorter, Greenhill wants to make her athletic finale something special.

“I’ve loved every minute of my time spent playing Huntington lacrosse,” Greenhill said. “This will be my fifth year on the team and I’ve learned so much from my coaches and the older girls on the team, which has helped me develop into the lacrosse player I am today. It’s sad that it’s my last year, but I’m really looking forward to the start of the season!”
