The Huntington wrestling team will take to the mat on Saturday in the Suffolk League IV tournament at North Babylon.
Coaches met Thursday night for a seeding meeting to establish brackets for each of the 15 weight classes. Weigh-ins will be held Saturday morning from 8-9 a.m. Preliminary round matches will commence at 9:30 a.m. The action will continue throughout the day with the semi-finals scheduled for 2 p.m. and consolation round bouts slated for 3:30 p.m. The finals will be held at 4:30 p.m. Admission for the entire day is $6.
Rookie head coach Louis R. Giani has the team prepped for post season action.
Huntington’s top ten wrestlers based on their season record include eighth grader Robbie Smith (9-9), freshmen Joe Petrone (18-6) and Jaiden Erickson (15-13), sophomores Charles O’Rourke (14-9), Aedan McDonald (17-10), Ryan Baker (9-9), Billy Burton (7-7) and Tazedon Smith (16-9) and seniors Aidan McCooey (18-3) and William Mejia (9-7). The Blue Devils are also entering many other wrestlers spread across the weight classes.
Led by first year head coach Lou R. Giani and assistant coaches Kieran Mock, Omar Santiago and David Bergmann, Huntington will vie against teams Eastport-South Manor, North Babylon, Bellport, Half Hollow Hills West, West Islip and Deer Park.
The top four place finishers in each of the 15 weight classes will earn berths in the Section XI Championships next Saturday and Sunday (February 10-11) at Suffolk-West in Brentwood. The top finishers in that tournament will advance to the state intersectional tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany on February 23-24.
