The Huntington girls’ lacrosse program’s staff is taking shape. Huntington School Board members appointed coaches to fill six of the seven positions during a public meeting last Monday night at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School.

The Blue Devil varsity team’s new head coach is Beth Vogelsang, who served several seasons as assistant coach. She will be assisted by last season’s junior varsity head coach, Vincent Tannazzo and a still to be named second assistant coach.

Next spring’s JV team will be led by head coach Shea Scully and new assistant coach Chiara Maimone. The team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School will be coached by Linda Costello-Roth and Ysrael Gonzalez.

The varsity head coaching position opened when Huntington alum Kim Gilroy stepped down following last season after coaching the team for two years.

Last season’s varsity finished 8-6 in Suffolk Division I play and went 8-7 overall. The JV team posted a magnificent 12-2 mark.

Vogelsang has been a Huntington physical education teacher since September 2015. A graduate of East Islip High School, she obtained a Bachelor’s of Science degree in physical education at SUNY Cortland with a concentration in adaptive learning and a master’s degree in health education at West Virginia University.

Ms. Vogelsang has coached varsity girls’ cross country and lacrosse and JV girls’ volleyball. Prior to coming to Huntington, she coached middle school girls’ soccer and JV girls’ lacrosse in Kings Park, winning Coach of the Year honors.

A graduate of Syosset High School, Mr. Tannazzo studied business on the undergraduate level before earning a master’s degree in secondary math education at LIU-CW Post College. He covered for a Finley teacher on a leave of absence in June 2003 prior to joining the school’s faculty full-time in September 2003.

Tannazzo coached the Finley boys’ lacrosse team for 13 years and has been the Blue Devil assistant varsity girls’ soccer coach for seven seasons. Before ascending to the varsity level, he coached the Finley boys’ soccer team for two years and was the JV boys’ soccer coach for two seasons. He also coached the JV girls’ soccer team for a year.

A member of Huntington High School’s Class of 2011, Scully was an assistant JV coach last year. She is currently the Blue Devil JV girls’ basketball team’s head coach.

Scully earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Bridgeport. She studied fashion merchandising on the undergraduate level before obtaining a master’s degree in elementary education in 2017. She played lacrosse at Bridgeport on a full athletic scholarship. She was an assistant lacrosse coach at Greenwich High School in 2017 and also coached the Chelsea Piers club team in 2016/17.

A graduate of Harborfields High School, Maimone obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in fashion merchandising/business at West Virginia University in 2013. She was the Harborfields JV girls’ lacrosse team’s head coach last spring. She is beginning pursuit of a graduate degree in education.

The JV and varsity season officially starts on March 4. The Finley Middle School season will open on March 25.
