Huntington High School’s boys’ indoor track team’s 4x400m relay is a very special group consisting of Johnathan Smith, Justin Stevens, CJ Kiviat and Anthony Joseph. The gifted foursome improved their season best time to 3:24.51 this past Saturday night at the Armory Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational in Manhattan.
The Blue Devils finished second behind only PSAL’s Christopher Columbus and far ahead of the other 30 teams in the event.
Huntington is now ranked No. 1 on Long Island in the 4x400m relay and No. 2 in New York State.
Abby Maichin Enjoys Career Night . . .
Junior Abby Maichin enjoyed a career night, pouring in 23 points and tallying 10 rebounds and four steals to lead the Huntington varsity girls’ basketball team to a 37-30 victory over visiting Bellport in the Suffolk League III opener.
Maichin was sensational on both ends of the court as Huntington raced out to a 14-4 first quarter advantage. Bellport came storming back with an 11-3 second quarter run to pull to within 17-15 at halftime. The Blue Devils outscored the Clippers in the third frame, 17-7 to gain the upper hand.
Paige Lennon scored six points on a pair of three-pointers. Christie Baade had three points and Emily Plachta and Holly Wright added two points each. Gianna Forte scored a point from the free throw line.
Huntington Falls at Home to Comsewogue . . .
The Huntington wrestling team fell at home to Comsewogue last week, 45-25, but several Blue Devils wrestled fine matches.
Joe Petrone (106 lbs.) and Robbie Smith (170 lbs.) recorded Huntington’s lone pins, with Petrone’s coming in 46 seconds and Smith’s being timed at 3:40.
Billy Burton (6-3 at 113 lbs.) Liam Lennon (9-8 at 120 lbs.), Aedan McDonald (17-6 at 132 lbs.) and Chas Forte (3-1 at 195 lbs.) all won decisions for the Blue Devils.
Blue Devils Set New Track Meet Record . . .
The Huntington boys’ indoor track and field team set a new meet record Saturday in the 4x200m relay at the Armory Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational in Manhattan.
Josiah Melendez, Jason Turner, Anthony Joseph and Nasir Youngblood ran the race in 1:34.43, shattering the previous meet record time of 1:35.19. The event field included 23 schools from across the tri-state area.
Aedan McDonald, Joe Petrone & Liam Lennon Pin Mat Foes . . .
Huntington’s Aedan McDonald, Joe Petrone and Liam Lennon both pinned their foes last Friday night, but the Blue Devil wrestling team fell at Bellport in a league meet, 56-25.
McDonald pinned Jonah Poueriet at 132 lbs. in 2:22 while Petrone overwhelmed Zach Basil at 106 lbs. in 1:55. Lennon felled Kyle Peterson at 120 lbs. in 2:29.
Billy Burton battled his way to a 6-4 decision over Calvin Pedatella at 113 lbs. Tazadon Smith rolled past David Hartmann at 220 lbs., winning a major decision, 19-7.
Max Rentsch Drops 19 Points in Opener . . .
The Huntington varsity boys’ basketball team fell behind host Bellport early in the season opener, trailing 16-10 after one quarter and 42-20 at halftime.
While the Blue Devils were never able to erase their deficit, Huntington did receive three fine outstanding performances from freshman Max Rentsch, junior Dan Danziger and senior Ian Ardell.
Rentsch knocked down four baskets from beyond the three-point arc and had 19 points. Danziger dropped a pair of three-pointers and tallied 14 points. Ardell also had two three-pointers and 14 points. Lex Colato scored four points and Chad Rowe had two points. Jonah Anastos scored a point from the free throw line.
Blue Devil Swimmers Win Two . . .
The combined Huntington/Harborfields swimming and diving team won its first two meets of the season, toppling Deer Park (117-57) and Stony Brook (53-39).
Against Stony Brook, Huntington junior Chris Weber and senior Nate Gamboa swam on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.
Huntington’s Throwers Sharp in Manhattan . . .
The Blue Devil indoor track and field team’s throwers enjoyed a great day at the Armory Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational in Manhattan this past Saturday.
Huntington athletes captured medals in both shot put and weight throw. Senior Eric Sands (43-02.50 feet) and junior Gary Barash (42-09.00 feet) finished fourth and fifth, respectively in shot put. Sophomore Mekai Butts (39-05.50 feet) placed fourth in the freshman/sophomore division of the event.
In the weight throw, Sands tossed a personal best distance of 52-5.00 feet to place fifth while Barash’s best effort measured 46-04.25 to finish in ninth place in a field of 32 competitors.
Justin Stevens Superb in 600m . . .
Huntington junior Justin Stevens has been superb in the 600m run this winter. His time of 1:24.32 ranks him No. 1 in Suffolk; No. 2 on Long Island and No. 8 in New York State. He is less than three seconds off the No. 1 time in the state this season.
Jaden Bholan Clears High Jump Bar . . .
Senior Jaden Bholan is Huntington’s high jump star. The teenager is tied for the No. 5 ranking in the state this winter after having cleared 6-03.00 feet. He is ranked No. 2 in Suffolk and No. 3 on Long Island.
