Abby Maichin plays every game to win. The Huntington High School junior’s determination and drive for success encompasses every aspect of her life, not just athletics. She thrives on a challenge and pursues her goals with an unsurpassed passion.
The teenager is one of Huntington’s best basketball and lacrosse players and she is one of the Class of 2020’s top students, too. Ms. Maichin has been on the High Honor Roll in every marking period and she’s a member five different academic honor societies.

A graduate of the district’s dual language program, Ms. Maichin started her journey through Huntington UFSD in a kindergarten classroom at Southdown Primary School. Her current academic schedule includes classes in Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, AP Spanish, pre-Calculus, US History, Physics, Sports Marketing, Psychology and Health.
The junior’s closest friends include Megan Agrillo, Maya Santa-Maria, Lena Annunziata, Holly Wright, Caroline Hartough and Paige Lennon.
“Abby is one of the most driven and passionate people I know,” Ms. Annunziata said. “She knows what she wants and will do anything to achieve it. I’m lucky to call her one of my best friends and I can’t wait to see what big things come her way.”
Ms. Maichin is on the staff of the Huntingtonian, the high school’s yearbook. She is a photographer and also serves as the index editor. She’s popular and very well-known around the building.
The teenager has surrounded herself with a very high quality group of young people. “Abby is one of the best friends anyone could ask for,” Ms. Wright said. “She is the person you can count on to always be there for you! Playing two varsity sports with one of my best friends is honestly just so much fun. The amount of laughs and memories that Abby and I have shared are some that I will never forget. Abby has such a bright future ahead of her. I can’t wait to see all that she does.”
Ms. Maichin and her friends are remarkably loyal to each other. They have one another’s backs at all times. “Abby is an amazing person overall,” Ms. Lennon said. “Whenever I have a bad day she always makes it better. She so kind and caring and she’s so funny.”
Ms. Maichin’s favorite teachers include David Moriarty, Thomas Van Bell and Kelly Krycinski. She is a member of the high school’s National Honor Society chapter as well as the English, Spanish, Science and Math Honor Societies.
“Abby is a great kid,” Mr. Moriarty said. “She understands the value of hard work and how it can pay off in the long run. Abby’s competitive nature made her an excellent student in my class and it will serve her well in her future.”
Ms. Maichin has known where she will be attending college since she was a high school freshman. She verbally committed to the University of Notre Dame as a ninth grader after being recruited by the Fighting Irish to play on its women’s lacrosse team. She plans to study to become either a sports or criminal psychologist.
“I’ve wanted to go to Notre Dame since I was about five years old, cheering on the football team with my dad,” Ms. Maichin said. “The sense of tradition there makes me feel so at home. It’s always been my dream to play lacrosse there. Ever since I stepped on campus for the first time, I knew it was the place I was meant to be.”
The Blue Devil star was All-Division in lacrosse as a Huntington freshman after tallying 56 goals and nine assists. She captured All-County honors last spring following a season that saw her notch 48 goals and 20 assists.
Ms. Maichin is also a talented basketball player. She was All-League last winter and recently led Huntington to a tournament championship in Islip, where she garnered the MVP Award after scoring 15 points in the finals.
Whether it’s on a court or field or in a classroom, Huntington’s coaches and teachers can always be assured that Ms. Maichin is giving them her best effort. The bigger the challenge, the more she seems to thrive.
The teenager is thoroughly enjoying her time at Huntington High School. “My experience has been so much more than I could have asked for,” Ms. Maichin said. “I’m so grateful for the memories I have made here and the people I got to know along the way.”
