Huntington UFSD’s summer music and art enrichment program is taking shape. Classes will run from Monday, July 1 through Friday, July 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. A detailed program brochure along with registration information are both being finalized now and will be released soon.
Courses will be open to all students entering grades 2-9. Students from surrounding school districts are welcome, provided they supply their own musical instrument. All courses will be held at Huntington High School.

Coordinated by Huntington music teacher Brian Stellato, last summer’s program featured many traditionally popular courses. SCOPE and Huntington UFSD collaborate to offer the classes.
Mr. Stellato anticipates hiring a staff of approximately 10 teachers and another 10 high school student-assistants. The group will strive to provide summer program participants with an exceptional experience.
There were several new courses on last year’s schedule, including two sections of Fashion Design. The program brochure described the new class in this way: “Do you love fashion? Do you want to learn how to sew? In this class, you will learn about fashion design, draw your own fashion illustrations, create hand-sewn projects, and try out a sewing machine.”
A Capella Experience was another new offering. “Sing in a fun group setting where the only instruments are your voices,” according to the course description. “If you love the Pitch Perfect movies, you’re sure to love this class! All levels of prior voice experience are welcome.”
Student were also able to register for a two-period Musical Theater class, which featured singing, acting and movement. “Students will be singing and acting in this creative class as we prepare for a mini production,” stated the course description. “All students are encouraged to sign-up for this course regardless of their acting or singing experience.”
The 2019 summer program will once again utilize a four period schedule: 8:30-9:20 a.m.; 9:30-10:20 a.m.; 10:30-11:20 a.m.; 11:30-12:20 p.m. Students can register for one, two, three or even four separate classes. It’s up to them.
Last summer’s program included the following music classes: Beginner Piano, Intermediate and Advanced Orchestra, Intermediate Band, Jazz Band, Beginner Band and String Lessons, Ukulele Jam Band I and II, Flute Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Electronic Music Composing, Musical Theater, Introduction to Acting and A Capella Experience.
Art classes included: Ceramics, Polymer Clay, Chalk/Painter’s Palette, Modern Jewelry Making, Fashion Design, Photoshop/Digital Photography and Cartooning Animation.
Demand was so great for the ukulele course that two sections of Ukulele Jam Band I were offered.
Students will again be able to get a head start on a new instrument during the summer program. Beginning instrument lessons will again be available in small groups for those entering grades 4-9. The course will be provided for students who wish to learn how to play the violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba or percussion. This is a beginning level course designed for students who have never played the instrument and have been assigned this instrument by their school music teacher. A lesson book is provided.
