The Huntington High School softball team won its first game of the season when it edged Half Hollow Hills East, 8-6.
The Blue Devils scored twice in the first inning and pushed another run across the plate in the second inning. Leading 6-5, Huntington scored two more times in the top of seventh to move ahead 8-5 and give it the margin for victory.
Sophomore Anna Wickey banged out three doubles in the game. Eighth grader Maddie Bavaro gave Huntington a 7-5 lead in the seventh inning with an RBI single. Junior Maya DelGiudice picked up the win on the mound.
The Blue Devils are coached by John Walsh and Jim Byrnes.
Emma Greenhill’s Six Goals Carry Huntington
The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team desperately needed a win at Commack on Thursday afternoon and the Blue Devils got it, turning back the Rams on their home field, 14-8.
Senior Emma Greenhill was the star of the game, tallying six goals to pace the Blue Devils. “It was a great team effort,” she said. “We all knew that it was time to step up and get the win. We all put in a full 50 minutes, which was our goal for the game and it definitely paid off!”
Huntington led at halftime, 8-4. The victory improved the Blue Devils’ record to 5-2 halfway through the season.
Isabella Piccola had four goals and an assist. Abby Maichin notched three goals and a pair of assists. Sarah Agrillo had a goal and an assist. Amber Stieve and Marissa Stafford also had assists in the game.
Greenhill was on fire. In addition to scoring six goals, she had seven self-draws and won 15-of-24 faceoffs.
Huntington goalies Maya Santa-Maria and Megan Bacik recorded four saves each.
Nat Amato Scores Game Winner
Nat Amato’s goal with 11 seconds remaining in the game broke a 7-7 tie and propelled the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team to an important victory at William Floyd on Wednesday afternoon.
Freddie Amato dodged and passed the ball across the field to his brother, Nat who put the step-down shot past William Floyd goalie Andrew Brust to give Huntington an 8-7 lead and ultimately the Suffolk Division I win.
“We played a good game,” said senior Anthony McDonald, who plays defense and is a team captain. “Our defense has really stepped us this season and played big again today. We still have a lot to work on, but we are moving in the right direction.”
The Blue Devils took a 7-4 halftime lead, but William Floyd rallied for three unanswered third period goals to tie the score. There things stayed until the Amato brothers teamed up to break the deadlock.
Freddie Amato tallied three goals and an assist in the game. Luke Luckow had a goal and an assist. Jordan McCoy, Alex LaBella, Ryan Gorecki and Nat Amato each had one goal. Pat Durand had an assist. Huntington goalie Sam Bergman recorded 16 saves in the cage.

Blue Devils Fall to Riverhead
The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team was upended by Riverhead in Suffolk Division I play at Blue Devil Stadium, 9-6.
Emma Greenhill led Huntington with three goals and an assist. Sarah Agrillo had two goals and assisted on another. Abby Maichin had a goal and an assist. Paige Lennon also tallied an assist in the game.
Blue Devil goalies Maya Santa-Maria and Megan Bacik played one half each and both had seven saves.
Huntington is coached by Kim Gilroy, Linda Costello-Roth and Beth Vogelsang.
Local Businesses Donate Helmet Wraps
Huntington School Board members recently accepted a donation of lacrosse helmet wraps from five different restaurants located in the village. Helmet wraps are sports decals.
Almarco, Christopher’s, Neraki Greek Mediterranean Grill, New York Panini and Samuri donated the wraps, which are valued at approximately $300.
Donation to Loughlin Scholarship Fund
Huntington School Board members recently accepted a $500 donation from the Loughlin family and credited it to the Donald A. Loughlin Founders Award fund.
Mr. Loughlin recently passed away. He founded the Huntington High School boys’ lacrosse program in the mid-1950s and coached it during its earliest seasons before becoming an assistant principal and eventually moving upstate to become a principal at Sperry High School in Rush-Henrietta.
Josh Bailin Wins in Straight Sets
The Huntington boys’ tennis team evened its overall record to 4-4 by serving its way past visiting Kings Park, 5-2. The Blue Devils received many inspired performances during the match, including one by freshman No. 3 singles Josh Bailin, who won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
