The Huntington varsity baseball team dropped a 12-5 verdict at North Babylon last week, but freshman Chris Segreti had a thrill, blasting a grand slam in the third inning. The teenager wears jersey No. 55. He can pitch, play second base and outfield, too.

Through the first eight league games, Segreti is batting a very respectable .263 with seven runs batted in. He has had a pair of multi-hit games and has a .417 on base percentage and .474 slugging percentage. In 24 plate appearances, he has struck-out only twice.

Former Blue Devil Teammates Meet

Former Blue Devil track and field teammates Scott Gulizio and Shane McGuire met last weekend on a college track at the Bucknell University Bison Outdoor Classic.

Gulizio is a Bucknell junior while McGuire is in his freshman year at Buffalo. “It was cool meeting up with Scott and we both ran pretty well,” McGuire said.

A member of Huntington’s Class of 2015, Gulizio is among Bucknell’s top mid-distance runners. McGuire graduated with Huntington’s Class of 2017. His work ethic and early results on the track have impressed the Buffalo program.

“This was only my second race back from the injury that I faced during my senior year of high school,” McGuire said. “I redshirted during the college indoor season, so running 1:54.70 [at the Bison Classic] was exciting for me and showed my hard work.”

Gulizio ran in the fastest heat last weekend. “It was cool seeing both of us running at the next level since he was one of the people who convinced me during my sophomore year of high school to run track,” McGuire said.

Gulizio finished the race in 18th place (1:54.61) in a field of 145 spread across numerous heats. McGuire placed 22nd. The Huntington duo crossed the finish line four seconds off the first place finisher’s time.

Whitman’s 6-2 third quarter run proved to be the difference in the game. Huntington outscored the Wildcats in the final frame, 5-3 but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Blue Devils’ deficit.

Luke Luckow led Huntington with three goals and an assist. Colby Martin added three goals. Mike Abbondandelo, Jack Stewart, Freddie Amato and Ryan Gorecki also scored in the game. Pat Durand had an assist. Sam Bergman made nine saves in goal.
