Lily Tierney and Charlotte Gordon are very special young women. The two Woodhull Intermediate School sixth graders are outstanding students and valued classmates. Teachers enjoy working with them and everyone around the building holds them in high esteem.

Ms. Tierney and Ms. Gordon claimed regional honors in the New York State PTA’s Reflections contest. Ms. Tierney went on to capture first place in the state, winning an Award of Excellence and a berth in the national finals in June. The duo both entered pieces in the literature category.

“Congratulations to Lily and Charlotte; both outstanding young ladies,” Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky said. “What they have accomplished in this year’s Reflections contest, among a large volume of entries, is something to be celebrated. I am hopeful that they will continue to hone their writing skills throughout their years in Huntington and beyond. Additional best wishes to Lily as her entry hits the national stage!”

Ms. Tierney is one of only 29 Award of Excellence recipients in the state. They will all advance to the national competition with high hopes. The 2017/18 Reflections theme is “Within Reach.” All entries were required to incorporate this theme.

“We are so proud of Lily and Charlotte and are thrilled they both won honors,” Woodhull Principal Traci Roethel said. “They are wonderful young women with bright futures. We wish Lily the very best of luck as she moves forward to the national level contest.”

“The Reflections program is a National PTA and NYS PTA cultural arts competition that gives students confidence in their abilities to explore ideas and learn through the arts,” according to the state PTA website. “The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works.”

Thousands of students submit entries annually in categories ranging from dance choreography, film production, literature and music composition to photography and visual arts.
