The Huntington varsity baseball team is led by three captains, including junior Elian Pimental and seniors Luke Eidle and Will Vollack. The teenagers are longtime participants in the district’s baseball program.
The Blue Devils are a confident bunch. No one gets too high or too low following a win or a loss. The players just go about their business, striving to get a little bit better every day.
“Huntington baseball has not seen a team like this in close to a decade,” Vollack said. “The team is coming together in such a way that anything less than playoffs this year would be a major disappointment. With a new and youthful pitching staff, along with our veterans Luke and Elian, other teams can hardly recognize us from previous seasons as they are whiffed by players several years younger than they are. Looking forward, we do still have some refinement and timing to improve upon, but if we can manage to do so, Section XI has a new threat on the diamond.”
Charlotte Maggio Paces Blue Devils
The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team recorded its fourth consecutive victory without a loss as the Blue Devils topped visiting Copiague on Monday afternoon, 15-1.
Charlotte Maggio tallied three goals and an assists and Abby Maichin had two goals and two assists to lead Huntington. Emma Greenhill added two goals and an assists and Isabella Annunziata notched a goal and three goals.
The Blue Devils’ well-balanced offense was firing on all cylinders. Sarah Agrillo had a goal and an assist. Katie Browne, Jordan Forte, Alexa Amorison, Megan Agrillo, Caroline Hartough and Catie Ricciardelli all scored goals in the game. Isabella Piccola, Julia Steinberg, Marissa Stafford contributed assists.
Blue Devils Rally for Victory
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team won its second straight road game when it nipped Comsewogue last Saturday on the Warriors’ home field, 5-4.
Huntington trailed at halftime, 1-0 after a first half that saw both teams’ defenses and goalies completely dominate play. Comsewogue extended its advantage to 3-1 after three periods. The Blue Devils then went on a 4-1 fourth period run to lock up their third victory in four tries.
Huntington sophomore Cole Pillion won 9-of-11 face-offs to boost the team’s fortunes. Freddie Amato, Ryan Gorecki, Jon Koumas, Luke Luckow and Colby Martin all scored goals for the Blue Devils. Patrick Durand had three assists and Amato had two. Sam Bergman tallied 12 saves in goal.
Trailing 4-3, Gorecki tied the game with a goal with 3:41 remaining. Martin then scored the game winner with just two seconds left on the clock.
Elian Pimental Hurls H-ton to Baseball Win
Copiague scored three runs in the top of the first inning and went on to take a 5-1 lead after 3 ½ innings, but the Huntington varsity baseball team exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth and scored three more times in the fifth to capture a 12-8 victory in league play.
Luke Eidle belted out three hits, drove in a run and scored twice. Chris Segreti, Justin Italiano, Will Vollack, Michael Marziliano and Aidan Bender collected two hits each. Segretti had three runs batted in and scored twice. Marziliano drove in two runs.
Elian Pimental hurled six innings, surrendering seven hits and five earned runs. The junior walked five and struck-out seven. He also had a hit and an RBI, scored twice and had a pair of walks.
Eidle, Segreti, Vollack and Marziliano all had extra-base hits. Kyle Colleluori, Italiano and Marziliano stole bases. Colleluori also walked three times and scored twice.
Colleluori pitched the seventh frame, holding Copiague hitless and fanning one in the 1-2-3 inning.
Abby Maichin Spectacular in Lax Victory
Abby Maichin was spectacular last Friday afternoon, scoring six goals and assisting on three others to lead the Huntington varsity girls’ lacrosse over host Longwood in a Suffolk Division I game, 11-6.
The Blue Devils went into halftime with a 5-4 lead before going on a 6-2 second half run to win their third straight game without a loss.
Maichin now has 12 goals and four assists through three games this spring. Sarah Agrillo scored two goals and had an assist. Emma Greenhill also notched a pair of goals. Isabella Piccola tallied a goal and an assist. Holly Wright and Marissa Stafford both had assists in the game. Maya Santa-Maria was sensational in goal, stopping nine shots.
H-ton Alum Anna Tesoriero is Magnificent
Huntington High School Class of 2015 member Anna Tesoriero has started all 12 games in goal this spring for the Stony Brook University women’s lacrosse team, which is ranked No. 1 in the country in NCAA Division I.
The former Blue Devil great has played 596 minutes in the cage this spring and recorded 64 saves while giving up just 63 goals. Her save percentage places Tesoriero among the top goalies in the nation.
Tesoriero was a five year varsity letter-winner during her time with the Huntington lacrosse program. She won three letters in field hockey. She won post-season honors in both sports, including Academic All-American in lacrosse as a senior.
The Huntington grad is pursuing an academic major in nursing at Stony Brook.
Alum Hannah Burnett Stars at UMass Amherst
Huntigtno High School Class of 2013 member Hannah Burnett is enjoyed a fabulous season with the University of Massachusetts Amherst women’s lacrosse team.
Entering the current week, Burnett has tallied 39 goals and nine assists in 12 games. She’s even scooped up 10 ground balls. In last week’s 22-10 victory over LaSalle, the Huntington grad scored four goals.
A sports management major at UMass Amherst, Burnett played soccer, basketball and lacrosse for the Blue Devils. Repeatedly named a New York State Scholar Athlete, she won the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence as a senior. She was a US Lacrosse Academic All-American.
