Ainsley Lumpe Sensational in Overtime Loss

It would have been the biggest victory of the season if the Huntington girls’ soccer team could have pulled it off. H-ton Field Hockey Falls in Shootout

The Huntington varsity field hockey team lost an overtime shootout heartbreaker to Smithtown West on Friday afternoon, 2-1.

The teams engaged in what can only be called a classic defensive battle during the first half. Neither could overcome the other’s steel curtain. The Blue Devils finally ended the stalemate when Anna Wickey put a shot past Bulls goalie Kirsten Rafferty at the 24:11 mark of the second half.

Just 12 seconds away from victory, the Blue Devils were called for a corner penalty. The clocked ticked down until time expired, but the sequence was able to play out.

After three straight Smithtown West corner plays, the Bulls were given a stroke, which Brooke Vitullo used to tie the score by blasting the shot past Huntington’s magnificent goalie Kaitlyn Sage.

As the two teams headed into a 10 minute overtime period the field was reduced to seven on seven players to encourage scoring, but neither squad was able to get the ball behind the other’s goalie.

Forced into a shootout, Huntington’s Anna Wickey scored after two misses, but Smithtown West’s Vitulli and fellow senior captains Emily Montagnino and Natalie Condzal all scored when it was their turn to give the Bulls the victory.

The victory improves Huntington’s record to 5-4 this fall.
