Ten fall varsity athletic teams at Huntington High School have earned prestigious New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards based on the grade point averages of respective team members.
Huntington’s girls’ swimming and diving, field hockey, girls’ cross country, boys’ cross country, golf, girls’ soccer, boys’ soccer, girls’ tennis, girls’ volleyball and boys’ volleyball all received state scholar athlete team awards. Dozens of individual Blue Devil athletes were also recognized.
To receive team recognition, the team’s average GPA for 75 percent of the roster must be equal to or greater than 90.00. Higher athlete GPAs can be used offset lower ones. However, only students with a 90 or above receive scholar athlete pins, even if a student with a lower GPA was used in the calculation.
Although the Blue Devil varsity football squad didn’t qualify for the scholar athlete team award, a dozen individual players were recognized as state scholar athletes after spectacular classroom performances during the recent fall season.
“This is a wonderful honor for our hardworking student-athletes,” said Georgia D. McCarthy, district director of health, physical education and interscholastic athletics. “These young men and women have set high goals for themselves, both athletically and academically and we are very proud of them.”

Girls’ swimming and diving: Patricia Arceri, Hannah Bailin, Gretel Cassell, Caelan Clayton, Gaia D’Anna and Sasha Koulakova.
Field hockey: Brooke Biernacki, Lianna DeChiaro, Madelyn Kye, Lauren LoScalzo, Morgan Minicozzi, Julie Rogel, Kaitlyn Sage, Maya Santa-Maria, Anna Wickey and Holly Wright.
Girls’ cross country: Nicole Arenth, Katherine Burton, Hadley Clayton, Yasmin Khilji-Neal, Alexandra McKenzie, Christina Nigro, Diya Rai-Gersappe, Valerie Rogel, Ella Siepel and Erika Varady.
Boys’ cross country: Robert Caputi, Christopher Carmen, Matthew Fallon, Aidan Heller, David Marroquin-Lopez, Ethan Mcguinness, Andrew McKenzie, Gabriel Medina-Jaudes, Nicolas Sanin, John Segreti, Jason Verville and Graham Young.
Golf: Kyle Chin, Kyle Colleluori, Tyler Gerbavsits, Jack Giamo, Matthew Giamo, John Lourenso, Mackenzie McManus, Anthony Puglisi, Joseph Sclafani and Patrick Sclafani.
