Grandfriends Club is Ready for Action

Huntington High School’s Grandfriends club is up and running. The group hosts social events and engages in various intergenerational community-oriented activities. Club members visit nursing homes and assisted living residences. The visits include a variety of activities such as board games, including bingo, baking, craft-making, charades, reading books and magazines, letter writing and just talking, listening and laughing. The year culminates in May when the club hosts its annual senior-senior prom in the school cafeteria.

This year’s slate of club officers includes Jay Ryan Schmitt (president), Samantha Maixner (vice president), Melissa Lopez (vice president), Kaitlyn Smith (treasurer), Shaye O’Beirne (treasurer), Reid Bellistri (secretary), Madeline Flores (secretary), Sophie Dellecave (historian) and Yasmin Khilji-Neal (historian). Business teacher Suzie Biagi and retired librarian Camille DeCanio are the club’s faculty advisors.

HHS Mock Trial Team

During its relatively short history, the Huntington High School mock trial team has proved formidable in competition against some of Suffolk’s finest programs. Local attorneys and Huntington alums Xavier Palacios and Jack Piana will once again serve as the team’s legal advisor. Teacher Suzie Biagi is the group’s faculty advisor.

This year’s team is still being organized. Courtroom action won’t commence until January 2018. Max Robins and Alyssa Befumo are co-presidents of the team with Melissa Lopez filling the post of vice president.
