Finley-7 Girls’ Basketball Improves Skills

The J. Taylor Finley Middle School seventh grade girls’ basketball team was led by Katie Browne, Caroline Gorecki, Mackenzie McManus, Theadora Carnesi and Tallulah Pitti.

“Fundamental basketball skills improved throughout the season,” head coach Phil Lowe said. “As skills improved, player’s basketball IQ improved. The team practiced hard and played harder toward the end of the season.”

The highlight of the season was a home game against West Hollow. “The score went back and forth all four quarters,” Lowe said. “In the extra quarter we went ahead on breakaway layups and played excellent team defense to win 22-19. Floor leadership by Katie Browne and Mackenzie McManus kept us in the game.”

Gorecki, Gianna Petrone, Grace Stolfa and Sophia Toscano served as team captains. The squad consisted of 18 players.

Lowe said Browne is a “good shooter and defender with quick feet.” The coach complimented Gorecki for being a “team player and a good defensive player who hustles.” McManus is a “tough defender, good shooter who can finish and a player that hustles.” Carnesi is a “tough defender and very physical player who hustles,” said Lowe, who added the teenager can “rebound and is very aggressive.” Pitti is still another “tough defender” who has “good footwork” and who “hustles.” She is also a “team player.”

Finley-7 compiled a 1-9 mark.
