The Huntington varsity baseball team staged a three run seventh inning rally to nip Centereach on its home field on Saturday afternoon, 10-9.
The Blue Devils trailed 9-7 in the final frame before loaded the bases. Matt Montefusco dug in at the plate and delivered a bases clearing hit to give the Huntington the lead.
Huntington’s offense provided 11 hits while the Blue Devil pitchers surrounded just six. Centereach took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring an unearned run. The Cougars scored four more times in the third inning.
Huntington pitcher Elian Pimental picked up the victory by pitching scoreless ball over four and one-third innings. The teenager gave up three hits, fanned one and walked no one. Pimental came into the game in relief of Blue Devil starter Luke Eidle, who hurled two and two-third innings.
Steven Napurano and Will Vollack turned in multiple hit performances for Huntington.
Maichin is Sensational
Huntington freshman Abby Maichin enjoyed a sensational day, scoring five goals and showcasing her talents. But, the Blue Devil girls’ lacrosse team couldn’t overcome Middle Country’s high powered offense, falling in a game played at Newfield, 20-7.
Maichin was close to being unstoppable, repeatedly finding the back of the cage. The teenager has already given a verbal commitment to Notre Dame. Boston University bound senior Ryann Gaffney scored Huntington’s other two goals.
H-ton Boys’ Lax Tops Northport, 12-8
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team used a strong fourth period performance to topple visiting Northport, 12-8 in a Suffolk Division I matchup at Blue Devil Stadium.
The teams battled to a 1-1 first period draw before Huntington moved ahead by halftime, 6-4. Northport narrowed its deficit to one goal by outscoring the Blue Devils in the third frame, 2-1. Huntington then went on to score five goals in the fourth period to secure the victory.
Garrett Moya led the charge for the Blue Devils with two goals and three assists. Nat Amato, Austin Reda and Matt Gelb all tallied two goals and an assist. Colby Martin and Jared Leake scored two goals each. James Shea added an assist.
Huntington goalie Sam Bergman enjoyed one of the most sensational games of his career by stopping 20 Northport shots.
Jolena Smith Nails Personal Best
The Huntington girls’ track and field team enjoyed a nice day at the Suffolk Coaches Meet on Saturday at Sachem North.
Blue Devil highlights included:
• Frosh/Soph discus: Nephar Durand continued her standout season with another first place finish, tossing 89-06 feet.
• Frosh/Soph shot put: Durand placed third with a best effort that measured 31-03.50 feet.
• Shot put: Jolena Smith nailed a personal best throw of 32-05 feet.
• Frosh/Soph 400m hurdles: Sophie Dellecave took second overall, running a personal best time of 71.94 seconds. Hadley Clayton also hit a best time of 74.15 for seventh place.
• Frosh/Soph race-walk: Erika Varady finished second in 7:35.93, less than a second behind the first place winner. Keily Rivas closed well to capture third in 7:52.90.
• 400m dash: Marina Ruzic won her heat and placed ninth overall in a time of 63.33.
• 800m run: Nicole Abbondandelo started off with a blistering pace and went on to place seventh in a personal best time of 2:26.13. “She has run faster on a relay, but this is an early season best,” said Shawn Anderson, Huntington’s head coach. Anna Gulizio ran a best of 2:35.19 in the event.
“Overall it was a solid day,” Anderson said. “Our goal was to work on a few things for our away meet against West Islip. We have a solid six weeks left before we get into championship season.”
Blue Devils’ 4x200 Relay is Unbeatable
Huntington’s 4x200m relay was unbeatable at the Derrick Adkins Holiday Classic at Malverne High School.
The Blue Devils team of eighth grader Anthony Joseph, sophomore Jonathan Smith and seniors Lawrence Leake and Kyree Johnson circled the track twice in the blazing fast time of 1:30.03, finishing more than 3½ seconds ahead of runner-up Christ the King and easily outdistancing third place Freeport, fourth place Westbury and fifth place Uniondale. Elmont, Sheepshead Bay, Hempstead, Valley Stream Central and second teams from Westbury and Uniondale rounded out the field.
H-ton Boys’ Lax’s Upset Hopes Dashed
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team was thinking upset as they hung tough with state ranked West Islip. The Blue Devils battled the undefeated Lions to a 2-2 stalemate in the first period and trailed just 3-2 at halftime.
West Islip rallied for four unanswered third period goals on its way to outscoring Huntington in the second half, 5-1 and locking up an 8-3 victory.
Jared Leake and Garrett Moya both had a goal and an assist for Huntington. Matt Gelb also scored a goal and Patrick Durand contributed an assist. Goalkeeper Sam Bergman recorded 11 saves in the cage.
Alum Mackenzie Maloney Lifts Wells College
Mackenzie Maloney has been on fire this spring, leading the Wells College women’s lacrosse team with 33 goals and six assists through the first eight games.
A member of Huntington High School’s Class of 2015, Ms. Maloney is studying elementary education at the Upstate New York college. She notched 50 goals and 10 assists as a Wells College freshman.
Earlier this season against D’Youville College, Ms. Maloney tallied 10 goals and added an assist, a career best and two shy of the Wells College record for goals in a single game.
Ms. Maloney captured All-Conference honors in each of the past two seasons with the Wells College soccer team. She had 10 goals and four assists last fall despite missing the final four games with an injury.
Ms. Maloney has played on the Blue Devil soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams throughout high school, helping each squad reach the post-season. She also found time to be a Natural Helper, volunteer with the Special Olympics and at Huntington Village Lacrosse Club’s community day and participate in Huntington’s Relay For Life.
Lawrence Leake Flies Past Competitors
Lawrence Leake turned in another splendid performance. The Huntington senior flew past his competitors to win the 400m hurdles at the Derrick Adkins Holiday Classic at Malverne High School.
Mr. Leake blew past runners from Christ the King, Uniondale, Baldwin, Copiague, Sheepshead Bay and Westbury, crossing the finish line in the magnificent time of 55.68 seconds.
The Blue Devil track star is currently ranked No. 1 on Long Island and No. 2 in the state in the event.
Later in the meet, Mr. Leake ran a leg on Huntington’s gold medal winning 4x200m relay team.
Blue Devil Lax Lead Evaporates
The Huntington girls’ lacrosse jumped out to a comfortable lead at Riverhead last week, but got swept away in the second half, dropping an 18-11 decision.
The Blue Devils took an early lead, before seeing it evaporate. Huntington trailed 9-8 at halftime. Riverhead put the game away in the second half when it went on a 9-3 run.
Freshman Abby Maichin led the Blue Devils with five goals. Ryann Gaffney scored three times and Emma Greenhill added two goals and an assist. Isabella Piccola had a goal and an assist. Marissa Stafford also picked up an assist in the game.
Huntington goalie Maya Santa-Maria recorded 10 saves. Megan Bacik also stopped a pair of shots for the Blue Devils.
Kyree Johnson Dazzles Crowd
Huntington senior Kyree Johnson dazzled the crowd, winning the 400m dash in 48.39 seconds at the Derrick Adkins Holiday Classic at Malverne High School.
Mr. Johnson’s time in the event is the fastest on Long Island and in New York State this spring. He vanquished a field of 30 runners, including competitors from Nassau, Suffolk, New York City and parochial high schools.
A 1995 world champion and 1996 Olympic gold medalist in the 400m high hurdles, Mr. Adkins was on hand today to congratulate Mr. Johnson, who was presented with a large trophy and a bouquet of flowers.
Blue Devils Showcase Future Track Stars
The Huntington boys’ track team showcased some its talented underclassmen at the Derrick Adkins Holiday Classic at Malverne High School.
Eighth graders Anthony Joseph, Chad Rowe and Jason Turner and sophomore Jonathan Smith bested a strong field in the Frosh/Soph 4x800m sprint medley relay. The Huntington quartet ran the race in a time of 1:39.58, easily turning back challenges from second place Uniondale and third place South Shore.
The race included 13 separate relay teams.
H-ton Lax Dominates Walt Whitman
Ryann Gaffney tallied two goals and three assists and Abby Maichin and Sydney Van den Valentyn scored four times each to lead the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team stormed past host Walt Whitman, 18-5. The Blue Devils jumped out to a huge 11-3 halftime lead and then put the game away by outscoring the Wildcats in the second half, 7-2.
Isabella Piccola had two goals and three assists and Emma Greenhill added two goals and an assist. Megan McDevitt notched a pair of goals. Emma Petrizzi had a goal and an assist. Marissa Staffford also scored. Amber Stieve and Paige Lennon had two assists each.
Huntington goalies Megan Bacik (five saves) and Maya Santa-Maria (four saves) combined to stop nine shots.
Upset Bid Falls Short
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team tried to pull off an upset of state champion Cold Spring Harbor last Saturday night, but fell a little bit short, dropped a 16-12 verdict to the Seahawks.
The Blue Devils rallied several times, tying the score and later pulling within a goal before Cold Spring Harbor’s high powered offense proved too much to overcome.
Garrett Moya led the Blue Devils with four goals. Matt Gelb had two goals and three assists and Ryan Gorecki and Colby Martin both scored twice. Jared Leake had a goal and an assist. Jack Stewart added two assists. Mike Abbondandelo and Luke Luckow also assisted on goals. Goalie Sam Bergman recorded eight saves.
