Senior members of the Huntington High School choir performed a selection of holiday songs during a public meeting of the Huntington School Board in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium this past Monday night.
Tazwar Khondoker Akber, Andrew Aprilgliano, Anna Ardell, Allyson Arleo, Olivia Baldanza, Michaela Carnesi, Manyara Cuadra, Wilson Garay, Grace Gedeon, Sarah James, Jason Kessler, Ingrid Oliva, Christina Reinertsen, Madeline Shea and Mary Katherine Wolber performed “Silent Night,” “Twelve Days of Christmas” and “Jingle Bells” under the direction of Victoria Garbarino.
Several faculty members and students made a presentation on computer coding in celebration of National Computer Science Week.
Trustees accepted four separate donations to the district. CBS Television Studios donated $7,200 to the Huntington High School athletic department after Blue Devil football players and coaches participated in the filming of a scene for the hit television series “Bull.”
The Huntington Elks Club donated 150 dictionaries to the third graders at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School and Jefferson Primary School. The donation is valued at $600.
Huntington teachers and students made a presentation on computer coding.
Russell Athletic donated $50,000 worth of athletic apparel and related items after presenting Huntington High School with its 2016 Fight Like Dylan Award.
Huntington parent Rick Kopstein donated seamless backdrop paper, an enlarger, print trays and a darkroom paper safe. The items will be utilized by the Huntington High School photography program. The donation carries an approximate value of $485.
Trustees also took the following actions:
• Approved longtime physical education teacher Jamie Fishlow’s resignation and retirement request, effective at the close of business on June 30, 2017.
• Appointed Sabrina Currao to work as a long-term substitute teacher at Washington Primary School from approximately January 17 through March 17. She will be filling in for a teacher who will be out on a child care related leave of absence.
• Approved fall post-season pay for high school coaches Shawn Anderson, Debra Cheskes, Steve Muller, James C. Byrnes, William J. Harris, Cable Jamison, Andrew White, Michael Marinello, Christopher Helmke, Margaret McConnell and Jamie Fishlow.
• Appointed Cheryl Feldman and Valinda O’Garra as assistant varsity fencing coaches.
• Authorized Alexia O’Connor to work as an athletic event supervisor.
• Appointed Patrice Boyle as a 10-month senior clerk typist at the high school, effective December 19.
• Appointed Eileen Dammers as a 12-month senior clerk typist at the high school, effective December 27.
• Appointed Aminta Morejon (Flower Hill School; five hours) and Carol Orengo (Finley Middle School; four hours) as food service workers.
• Accepted the resignations of Woodhull School monitor Linda Bender (effective December 16) and Flower Hill nurse Kristina Cavalcante (effective January 1, 2017).
• Appointed Patrice Boyle as the building level central treasurer at Huntington High School.
• Approved Teresa Connolly, Victoria Garbarino, Lucille Grello, Marta Herrera, Alyson Macaluso and Jessica Sandler to work as daily recurring substitute teachers.
• Approved Dixon Barth Keller to work as a per diem substitute teacher.
• Authorized the addition of the Ms. New York Senior America Pageant and Eastern Suffolk BOCES to the list of organizations approved to use district facilities.
• Approved overnight field trips for the varsity wrestling team (Windsor Christmas Tournament outside of Binghamton) and the varsity boys’ winter track and field team (48th Annual Dartmouth Relays in Hanover, New Hampshire).
• Approved overnight trips by Huntington High School’s Habitat for Humanity club to Novato, California and New Orleans, Louisiana.
• Adopted a resolution authorizing the alternative veterans’ tax exemption for qualified owners of cooperative apartments.
• Authorized Ronald Berry (security), Neysha Cortes (teacher aide), Ashley Haarstick (data expert), Nancy Herring (security) and Loretta Veveakis (teacher) to receive reimbursement for their district related travel between buildings.
• Authorized the superintendent to attend the District Administration Leadership Institute’s Superintendents Summit in Tampa, Florida. Participation is by invitation only for a select group of superintendents who have been identified by their peers as leaders in their region or state. Basic costs to attend the summit, including airfare, three nights lodging and meals will be paid for by the Institute.
