The Huntington boys’ soccer team closed out a sensational season with a hard fought loss to North Babylon in the Suffolk Class AA playoffs.
Seeded No. 11, the Blue Devils surrendered two first half goals to the sixth seeded Bulldogs and couldn’t make up the deficit the rest of the way. Goalie Renato Aguilar stopped nine shots for Huntington, which managed seven shots on the North Babylon goal.
The Blue Devils finished the campaign with an overall record of 12-2-2 and won a share of the league title for the first time since 1989. The win gave North Babylon a 14-1-1 mark.
Final Minutes Prove Costly
The Huntington field hockey team was knocked out of the Suffolk Class A playoffs when it dropped a 1-0 decision to East Islip. The Redmen scored what proved to be the winning goal with just 3:03 remaining in the second half.
Huntington goalie Tara Byrnes was exceptional and recorded 11 saves against rugged East Islip. The Blue Devils finished the season with an overall mark of 9-8. East Islip is 11-5.
The Redmen topped Huntington three times this season by scores of 3-1, 3-2 and 1-0.
Turnovers Doom Blue Devils
The Huntington football team turned the ball over time after time in a 23-7 loss at Eastport-South Manor last Friday night. The Blue Devils trailed 6-0 at halftime and 9-0 after three quarters.
Huntington’s only points came late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Will Wright hit Tim Mattiace with an eight yard touchdown pass. Justyn Tesoriero kicked the extra point.
A steady stream of fumbles and interceptions doomed the Blue Devils’ chances in the game. The team struggled offensively for much of the evening. Jahmik Curry electrified Huntington with a pair of long fourth quarter kick returns.
The loss dropped Huntington’s record to 2-5. The Sharks are 4-3.
A Satisfying Victory
The Huntington girls’ volleyball team came from behind to top Rocky Point, 3-2. After dropping the first two games, 12-25 and 23-25, the Blue Devils won three straight, 25-19, 25-19 and 25-11.
Heather Forster had five blocks and 10 “kills” in the match to lead Huntington. Teammates Marygrace Trousdell (13 kills) and Hayley Petrizzi (20 assists) also played key roles in the victory.
Sherman Wins College Crown
Huntington High School Class of 2014 member Nick Sherman won the Skyline Conference cross country championship. The teenager is a freshman at SUNY Maritime College.
Sherman became only the second Maritime cross country runner ever to capture the conference title when he cross the finish line in 28:03.61, nearly 34 seconds faster than runner-up Brian Wersan, a senior at St. Joseph’s College (Patchogue). The former Huntington star paced Maritime for an overall four place team finish in the championships, at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome last Sunday afternoon.
Sherman earned a spot on the 2014 Skyline Conference All-Conference First Team with his outstanding performance last weekend.
A week earlier, Sherman was named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week after finishing fifth in the St. Joseph’s Invitational, covering the 8K race course in 27:38. The time was his second best of the year in an 8,000 meter race as his career best finish came earlier in the season at the Bard Invitational with a time of 25:53. It marked the fifth time this fall that Sherman had been honored after earlier being recognized with a pair of conference Runner of the Week awards and two Rookie of the Week awards.
Final Regular Season Game
The Huntington High School field hockey team dropped a 3-2 verdict to host East Islip in the regular season finale. The loss dropped the Blue Devils’ league mark to 8-6.
East Islip held a 2-1 halftime advantage. The teams traded goals in the second frame. Freshman Elizabeth Berejka had a goal and an assist for the Blue Devils. Senior Anna Tesoriero also scored. Sophomore Grace Curran added an assist. Senior Tara Byrnes stopped 10 shots in goal.
