Gulizio the Hero
as HHS Boys' Soccer Wins
Scott Gulizio is a hero. The sophomore converted the winning penalty kick for the Huntington High School boys' soccer team last weekend as the Blue Devils topped host East Islip in a Suffolk Class AA out-bracket playoff game.
No. 17 Huntington took a 1-0 lead in the first half when sophomore Raul Alvarenga scored off an assist from sophomore Josh Canales. No. 15 East Islip tied the game with 1:20 remaining in the second half. That goal sent the game into overtime. The teams battled through three scoreless extra frames before entering the final penalty kick phase.
With the teams knotted 3-3 in penalty kicks, Blue Devil goalkeeper Ari Moskowitz made an acrobatic save, diving to his right to make a thrilling stop and prevent Huntington from going down to defeat at the hands of the Redmen. Then it was time for Gulizio to work his magic in the seventh round of the penalty kick phase.
Moskowitz, an exceptional senior, was brilliant in goal, recording 10 saves. With the victory, Huntington advances in the playoff bracket and will face No. 1 Brentwood in the second round of postseason play.
