The Huntington girls’ cross country team finished sixth out of 17 teams at the Suffolk Coaches Invitational. The Blue Devils were led by Celine Takekoshi who placed fourth and Kerri-Ann Giambruno, who crossed the line in 19th place.
Football Still Winless
Ricardo Caballero picked up a Kings Park fumble and sprinted 45 yards for a touchdown, but the Huntington varsity football team ended up losing its fourth straight game last Saturday, 21-6. The Blue Devil defense did a very credible job but the offense was stymied most of the afternoon. The loss dropped Huntington to 0-4.
Blue Devils Claim First Place
The Huntington varsity girls’ soccer team rallied for a 1-0 halftime deficit to top Deer Park, 2-1 and claim sole possession of first place in Suffolk League IV.
Emma Hayes-Hurley notched what proved to be the game winner when she scored on a rebound from teammate Angela Bosco’s free kick. Bosco tied the game 11 minutes earlier on a header from teammate Meredith McCourt. Blue Devil goalie Lori Messina stopped 12 shots in the net.
Marquez to the Rescue
With the Huntington boys’ soccer team locked in a scoreless tie with Kings Park through the first 50 minutes of play, Carlos Marquez finally put the ball in the net for the Blue Devils. Anthony Catarino picked up the assist. Matt Curley made five saves in goal. The 1-0 game was a true defensive struggled with some fierce midfield action.
Where’s Maria?
A smiling face is missing from Huntington High School this fall. Maria Marascia graduated last June and is now at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. “UMass is going really well,” she said late last week. “I love it here! I am taking history, math, computer science, biology and economics.”
Marascia won varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and spring track at Huntington where she was well-liked by both her teammates and coaches. At UMass she is on the NCAA Division I track and field team after being recruited by the school and has quickly learned about the the demands placed on college athletes.
“Track is a huge commitment so it hard for me to do anything beside track and class,” Marascia said. “But, everyone here is so nice and willing to help me with everything.”
McCourt and Bosco are Stars
Five different Blue Devil players scored goals as the Huntington girls’ soccer team moved past Copiague, 5-0. Meredith McCourt and Angela Bosco each notched one goal and two assists, respectively, and Allison Thompson, Emma Hayes-Hurley and Cristina Badalamenti also put balls in the net. Lori Messina and Hannah Burnett combined to make four saves in goal.
Overtime Victory
With two minutes remaining in overtime, Christian Caballero blasted a 15-yard shot into the goal to give the Huntington boys’ soccer team a 1-0 victory over Harborfields. Carlos Marquez recorded an assist on his cross pass to Caballero. Goalie E.J. Connell made four saves to preserve the shutout.
Back-to-Back Losses
The Huntington field hockey team lost to Sachem East, 3-0 and dropped a 4-0 game to Ward Melville. Blue Devil goalie Isabel Sorrentino made eight saves against Sachem East and 18 against powerhouse Ward Melville.
Lustberg! Lustberg!
Sara Lustberg certainly did her part in a 6-1 Huntington varsity girls’ tennis victory over Kings Park. Lustberg captured her first singles match, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4. The win allowed Huntington to move into second place in Suffolk League II.
A Very Young Team
This fall’s Huntington girls’ cross country team has a very young roster. Seven of the nine team members are freshmen. The ninth grade group includes Wilmarie Aviles, Nicole Caputo, Kerri-Ann Giambruno, Sara Goldenbaum-Manager, Amber Lindner, Samantha Martinez and Margaret Petryki. The squad also features sophomore Celine Takekoshi and junior Gabriella Mitchell, who is the Blue Devils’ captain. Debra Cheskes is Huntington’s coach.
Connell is Splendid
E.J. Connell recorded seven saves and was splendid in goal, but the Huntington boys’ soccer team dropped a hard-fought game to Hauppauge, 1-0. The contest was scoreless through the first 61 minutes before the Eagles finally found the back of the net.
Offensive Powers
Five players combined for seven goals as the Huntington junior varsity girls’ soccer team shutout Copiague, 7-0. The Blue Devil scorers included Dania Merilan, Stephanie Rafuse, Alexis Thomson, Allison Mehring and Rachel Bosco. Mackenzie Wall and Jackie Contino were sensational in goal.
