Blue Devil Crew Team Staff Appointed
With a two decade long history of exceptional performances, Huntington High School’s crew program has steadily built a sturdy reputation in state and regional rowing circles. The Blue Devil coaching staff has returned to full strength now that a pair of coaches have been appointed for the spring season.
Shawn Dunn has been named head coach and Anika Selle-Giehl will serve as the assistant. Huntington School Board members approved the appointments in a unanimous vote last week during a public meeting at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School.
Both coaches have long been active in crew as competitors and coaches. Their years of experience will be put to good use with a Blue Devil team that includes a mix of veterans and newcomers.
Ms. Dunn earned an undergraduate degree in forensic science at John Jay College. She went on to obtain a master’s degree at Stony Brook University in teaching Earth science. She later studied in Stony Brook’s educational leadership program, which prepares educators for careers as school administrators.
Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Dunn served as a head coach with the Long Island Rowing and Sagamore Rowing clubs.
Ms. Selle-Giehl obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in sports exercise at SUNY Potsdam in 2002. She has worked as an assistant crew coach at Ohio State University and Dowling Coach and as a head coach with the Long Island Rowing club.
Huntington’s new assistant coach competed on Germany’s national team at the World Championships in Poland, Belgium, Scotland, Italy and Greece. She won a gold medal in Poland in 1995 in the women’s 4x and silver medal in 1997 in the women’s lightweight 2x.
Since joining Long Island Rowing’s staff, the club has sent boats to the national championships and seen its athletes move on to some of the nation’s top colleges.
Hopes are running high for a successful Blue Devil season this spring.
