Spotlight on Huntington Photographer Meghan Scolo

Meghan Scolo exudes creativity. The Huntington High School senior is an artist. The teenager’s photography is sensational and winning new admirers by the day. She recently captured a Best in Show Award at the Huntington Arts Council’s High Arts Showcase XII, which had a two week run at the Main Street Gallery.

Ms. Scolo’s 9x12 digital portrait photograph of model Julia Garetano, a fellow Huntington senior, captivated gallery-goers. Mounted and framed, “Glitter” made a statement.

“It is one in a series that I have been working on that focuses on detailed portraits,” said Ms. Scolo about the award winning photograph. “I have been using creative lighting as well as paint and additional props to add interesting elements to the images. This particular image is intended to draw the viewer into the image and make you connect with the model.”

The teenager has grown as an artist and she has learned new techniques and refined her skills. “I have always had a strong connection with photography,” Ms. Scolo said. “Photography has helped me grow and gain confidence. I feel proud of the work I am producing and plan to continue with photography in college.”

“Meghan is an incredibly talented photographer. She is currently working on a beautiful series of portraits for her Advanced Placement course that are creative, thoughtful and thought provoking. Questions and Answers with Meghan Scolo

Q: How old are you and what grade are you in?
Meghan Scolo: “I’m currently 17 years old and I’m in twelfth grade.”

Q: How did you first get interested in photography?
Meghan Scolo: “I took Intro to Photography in tenth grade with Ms. Piffard and that was when I realized it was something I was very interested in.”

Q: Where do you get your ideas?
Meghan Scolo: “I search for inspiration from other artists and comments from Ms. Piffard and my classmates.”

Q: Is there any specific type of photography you like best?
Meghan Scolo: “I appreciate all types of photography, but my favorite would have to be portraits with dramatic lighting. This type of photography gives off a different emotion than any other type. Currently, I am working on a project involving using the face as a canvas. I have created my favorite photos yet.”

Q: How has the Huntington photography program helped you with your love of photography?
Meghan Scolo: “The Huntington photography program has helped me become more appreciative of my own work. When hearing that my work was going to be displayed, it made me realize that my photos do mean a lot to not just me, but to other people, too.”

Q: Do you plan to continue with photography or go to school for it?
Meghan Scolo: “Yes. Next fall I am attending SUNY Oswego and minoring in photography. I’m excited to go more in depth with photography and meet many new people who feel the same way I do about photography.”
