Math Doesn’t Intimidate Intern
Meghan Plant
Mathematics. Just the word can intimidate some students, but Meghan Plant certainly isn’t afraid of the subject. The Huntington High School senior is engaged in a credit bearing internship with math teacher Michael Graziano and enjoying the experience.
Ms. Plant is interning in a Common Core Geometry Honors class each day during eighth period. “The process is to gradually work towards teaching a full lesson and going through the process of creating a lesson and teaching the class on occasion,” Mr. Graziano explained. “She will be creating ‘do now’s,’ checking and going over homework and working with students as needed while I teach.”
The teenager was in Mr. Graziano’s class as a sophomore. “I loved having him as a teacher in tenth grade and found the subject easy and fun so last year when I was thinking of interning he came to mind first,” Ms. Plant said. “I love him! Our personalities are so much alike and I wanted my last year to be the best.”
Ms. Plant is considering the University of South Carolina, University of Alabama, University of Florida, University of Tennessee, University of Delaware, University of Georgia, Louisiana State University and Penn State for the next stage of her education. “I’m thinking of early childhood education, but not definite yet,” the senior said about a possible major and career.
“Meghan comes across as an individual determined to take on any challenge, regardless of its depth,” Mr. Graziano said. “Her contribution to the educational community is tremendous and benefits all who makes her acquaintance.”
“I told Mr. Graziano that I am here to help and learn the ropes,” Ms. Plant said. The senior’s final project will involve teaching a complete lesson from start to finish.
While math can be a challenge for many students, Mr. Graziano has a way of calming those fears and instilling confidence in the teenagers in his class. Ms. Plant’s warm smile and contagious laugh will only add to the tranquil atmosphere in the classroom.
