Woodhull Celebrates Summer Reading Participants
With leaves changing colors and starting to fall off trees and temperatures dropping, summer vacation might seem like so long ago, but the benefit of reading during July and August is being felt now for Woodhull Intermediate School students.
Woodhull recently honored students who participated in the district’s summer reading assignment initiative. The youngsters read three books and created a bookmark, which included a summary of a book.
Woodhull Principal Traci Roethel wants all of the fifth and sixth graders in the building to fall in love with reading. She knows it will help them across every academic discipline, strengthening their writing, spelling and vocabulary skills and benefitting them in countless other ways, too. School librarian Jenna Brittman is doing her part to encourage every student to read daily.
Each of the students honored for their summer reading were presented with a certificate of achievement. The group included Sarah Krisch, Tyler Walters, Sophia Thompson, Ryan Porzio, Kayla Fives, Haileigh Smith, Leigh Hepworth, Bianca Gomez, Rachel Morina, Abigail Pawlack, Nina Varvatsas, Nick Totura, Ella Kamenstein, Charlie Girimonti, Emily Plachta, Dylan Coleman, Mia Lopez, Renee McKean, Kaci McDonald, Markella Morkotsis, Gemma Cartwright, Julia Danseglio, Grace Stolfa, Ainsley Proctor, Gretel Cassell, Alyson Baker, TJ Lester, Clayton Ward, Charlotte Simon, Samantha Perille, Jasjeet Kaur, Eliza Walther, Joshua Youngquist, Sophia Matheus.
Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School opened in late January 1967 and initially housed kindergarten through sixth grades. It absorbed the entire student population from the old Roosevelt Elementary School, which was demolished during the 1960’s urban renewal craze to make way for Huntington Elementary School, which was built with a capacity of 1,000 students.
Mrs. Roethel and Assistant Principal Jarrett Stein are Woodhull’s educational leaders. The school includes a full complement of faculty and support staff. Students are also offered an extracurricular activities program, including sports intramurals.
