The Huntington High School wrestling team turned in an outstanding performance in the Herricks round robin tournament last Saturday. The Blue Devil matmen had five matches each over the course of the more than 10 hour competition.

Ryan Mock, Ethan Dwyer, John Arceri, Kyle Mock, Will Thomas, Carlos Pereira, Brandon Mendez, Joseph Puca, Jon Canas, Oscar Romero and Khari McNeil each captured the championship of their respective weight class. Chris Bierd placed second and Dylan Uvena finished fourth. In addition to Huntington, the tournament included squads from Wantagh, Herricks, Roslyn, Locust Valley, Hempstead, Plainview JFK and Chaminade high schools.

“It was a very long day, but we wrestled well from top to bottom,” said Travis Smith, Huntington’s head coach. “At this point of the season, we want to get as many matches for each of our guys as we can. We did some really good things on the mat. There is always something to work on, but overall, it was a great day.”

Blue Devils Come From Behind

The Huntington boys’ basketball team came from behind to edge West Babylon in a key Suffolk League IV game, 55-50. The victory improved Huntington’s record to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.

Kenny McCarthy led the Blue Devils with a game high 20 points, including three 3-point baskets. Shyheim Brewster had 10 points and Andrew Hampton had seven points, including several crucial baskets in the final minutes. Nat Amato and Scott Gulizio each had six points. Kenny Charles added four points and Matt Reed had two points.

Huntington Tops Sayville

The Huntington wrestling team defeated Sayville in a Suffolk League V dual meet, 63-21. The Blue Devils grabbed victories in 11-of-15 bouts. John Arceri, Kyle Mock, Will Thomas, Brandon Mendez, Joe Puca and John Canas all won their matches with pins. Carlos Pereira captured a 10-3 decision at 152 lbs. Ryan Mock, Ethan Dwyer, Oscar Romero and Khari McNeil won by forfeit.

Lindsay Sullivan Sparkles

The Huntington girls’ basketball team remained perfect this winter, topping West Babylon, 63-33. The Blue Devils are now 8-0 overall and 4-0 in league play. Lindsay Sullivan led the team with 13 points and six steals. Heather Forster had nine points, 20 rebounds and eight blocks. Katie Nugent added seven points, seven assists and four steals.

Huntington led 42-12 at halftime. Mackenzie Maloney had nine points in the game. Samantha Lynch added six points. Alexandra Heuwetter and Katie Reilly had four points each. Brooke Baade and Niamh Condon both had three points. Caitlin Knowles and Katie Seccafico added two points apiece.

Huntington Matmen Cruise Past Harborfields

The Huntington wrestling team cruised past visiting Harborfields last Friday in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium, 60-9. The victory was the Blue Devils’ third straight without a loss in league action. Harborfields fell to 2-1.

Huntington has won 12-of-13 dual meets overall this year. The Blue Devils were impressive against the Tornadoes, capturing 13-of-15 weight classes. “We looked quite good,” said Travis Smith, Huntington’s head coach. “We were aggressive and our conditioning paid off in several matches.”

Kyle Mock picked up a pin at 126 lbs. Ryan Mock and John Arceri won their matches by technical fall. Ethan Dwyer, Brandon Mendez, Joe Puca and Oscar Romero all captured major decisions. Carlos Pereira, Jaylen Rose and John Canas grappled to decisions. William Mejia, Ryan Postiglione and Chris Bierd won by forfeit.

Heather Forster on TV

Huntington basketball star Heather Forster was featured on the News 12 High School Sports Rush this past Sunday night. Forster appeared with Blue Devil head coach Mike Kaplan.

Forster notched her 1,000 career point last week against Deer Park during a home game. A Blue Devil mainstay for the past five years, she has signed an NCAA Division I letter of intent to play basketball at the University at Albany next year.

Blue Devils in Mat Rankings

Six Huntington High School wrestlers are ranked in the top six in Suffolk County in their respective weight class.

John Arceri is No. 1 at 113 lbs. Brandon Mendez is No. 2 at 152 lbs. Joe Puca is No. 4 at 160 lbs. Ryan Mock is No. 5 at 99 lbs. Ethan Dywer (106 lbs.) and Kyle Mock (113 lbs.) are both No. 6 in their respective weight class.
