Flower Hill Celebrates Earth Day
Flower Hill Primary School celebrated Earth Day by learning more about the value of recycling during a presentation by Huntington Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson.
Students were told they have the ability to make a real difference in their community, if not the world, by working with their families and friends to recycle items that might otherwise be thrown away and find their way into the waste stream.
The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, when about 20 million people across the United States participated in environmental teach-ins and related activities. It is estimated that more than a billion people in nearly 200 countries recently celebrated Earth Day in their respective communities by doing their part to help save the increasingly fragile environment.
Mr. Cuthbertson brought along with him some town employees who provided assistance during the presentation. The Flower Hill youngsters were engaged throughout the session and appeared genuinely excited to know they could get involved in making their community a cleaner place. Many said they are already recycling at home. There is also a recycling program in place at the school.
The presenters discussed what natural resources are used to make everyday objects like milk cartons, newspapers and even pickle jars. Students learned about the paper recycling process and what new products are created from recycled paper.
“The students were engaged and excited to make a difference by recycling more at home,” Flower Hill Principal Marlon Small said.
