Scott Gulizio Savoring Every Day
as a Senior
He’s one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Scott Gulizio is a polite, respectful and well-mannered teenager. The Huntington High School senior has many admirers among his classmates, teachers and coaches. He’s also a hardnosed athletic competitor and someone who isn’t afraid to assume an academic challenge or two.
A student in the Huntington School District since kindergarten, Mr. Gulizio has been a three sport star for the Blue Devils, excelling in soccer, basketball and track. “I’ve made lifelong friends through sports and it’s helped me feel so at ease here in Huntington,” he said.
The senior recently played a key role in the Blue Devil soccer team’s first league title in 25 years. “Scott is the best defender that I’ve ever coached,” said John Pagano, Huntington’s head coach. “There will be a huge void without him next fall.”
Mr. Gulizio is not only a fine athlete; he’s a solid student, too. His senior year schedule includes Advanced Placement Microeconomics, AP US Government and Politics, AP English Literature and Composition, Spanish V Honors, Honors Physics and Pre-Calculus AB Honors.
“Some of my favorite courses have been AP Biology, AP World History, AP US History, and Psychology,” Mr. Gulizio said. “I really have loved all of my teachers, but some of my favorites include: Mrs. [Deborah] Beck, Mrs. [Kelly] Krycinski, Mrs. [Camille] Tedeschi, Mrs. [Stacey] Byrnes and Mr. [Kenneth] Donovan.”
Mr. Gulizio said he’s been “blessed” to be a member of three varsity teams. He’s an excellent athlete and a leader among his teammates. Coaches depend on him and hold him in high esteem for his contributions on and off the field, court and track.
“Scott is a great all-around athlete,” said Ron Wilson, who coaches the teenager on the spring track team. “He’s a young man that is full of talent. Scott broke several records last year after returning to spring track from an injury that kept him away his entire sophomore year. He’s a great kid and a leader in his own right.”
The teenager was voted into the Natural Helpers club by his classmates as a sophomore “and I’m very grateful for it,” he said. “I’ve loved being a Natural Helper.” The organization trains students to help one another with their school and personal problems.
A member of Huntington’s Spanish and Social Studies honor society chapters, Mr. Gulizio also participates in the Young Leaders organization that has been active in community service related initiatives around town.
Mr. Gulizio is interested in studying physical therapy in college. He is in the process of applying to Bucknell, Wake Forest, Maryland, Delaware, Richmond and Lehigh universities.
“Some advice I’d give to an incoming Huntington freshman is to not take high school for granted. These are some of the best years of your life and it really does go fast,” Mr. Gulizio said. “Take advantage of all the opportunities Huntington has to offer. Join clubs, play sports and make the most of it. You won’t regret it.”
