Huntington School Briefs
Gabriela Escorbores has been approved for a probationary appointment to serve as a kindergarten dual language program teacher at Flower Hill Primary School. She will be eligible for tenure on September 1, 2017.
Ms. Escorbores earned a BA degree in child study at St. Joseph’s College in May 2013. She is currently studying at St. John’s University in Oakdale. She taught during 2013/14 at Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School in West Islip.
District officials reviewed 30 applications, pre-screened 15 candidates and conducted 11 personal interviews prior to recommending Ms. Escorbores for appointment.
District Accepts $40K State Grant
The Huntington School Board has accepted a $40,000 grant in aid from the State Education Department for general purpose use. The grant was arranged by New York State Senator Carl Marcellino.
Halloween Party at Washington School
The Washington Primary School PTA is sponsoring a Halloween party in the cafeteria and gym on Friday, October 24. There will be snacks, crafts and games. All Washington students and their families are invited. An adult must accompany their child.
Guidance Dept. Hosts Junior Night
The Huntington High School guidance department hosted an 11th grade student and parent night last week. Topics included graduation requirements and diploma changes, the NCAA pre-registration process and scheduling timeline, PSAT, SAT reasoning and subject tests and the ACT, Naviance family connections, overview of the college application process and scholarships.
Top Suffolk and State Musicians
Huntington High School features many of the finest musicians in the county and state this year.
Huntington’s All-County honorees include orchestra members Holly Grabowski (viola), Jessica Straub (double bass) and Brendan Wirth (cello); band members Justin Edgar-McNerney (snare drum), Kayla Eidle (French horn), Jack Malone (bassoon) Hallie Raskin (French horn) and Amy Schmelter (trumpet/cornet); mixed chorus members Declan Byrne (tenor 1), Darle Riordan (alto 1), Justin Waite (tenor 2), and Landary Rivas (tenor 2) and women’s choir member Brianne Neira (alto 2).
Mr. Rivas was also named All-State. Ms. Eidle, Ms. Straub and Mr. DelGiudice (guitar) were named All-State alternates.
“Students were selected by a county and statewide committee based on their NYSSMA (New York State School Music Assn.) scores, participation in past events and teacher recommendations,” said Sarah Gill, Huntington’s director of fine and performing arts. “For both the All-County and All-State festivals, students will gather in ensembles with their peers, work with accomplished conductors and in only three rehearsals, prepare and perform very advanced music.”
The All-County music festival concert is set for Friday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Half Hollow Hills East High School. The state winter conference and concerts will be held in Rochester on December 4-7.
Teaching Professional Development Academy
Dowling College and the Huntington School District have agreed to form “a cooperative partnership to develop student teachers in a new model of extensive interactions with teachers and students during two or three semesters depending upon the New York State teacher license and college diploma requirements.
Student teachers in the program need a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and must have completed two years of core coursework along with preliminary teaching courses.
Highsteppers Approved for Trip to Florida
The Huntington High School Highsteppers competitive dance team has been approved to travel to the NDA national championships at Hard Rock Live at Universal Orlando in Florida.
The Highsteppers will depart on Thursday, March 5 and return on Sunday, March 8. They will be accompanied by coaches Paige Tyree and Jessica Harris. There will be approximately five adult chaperones for the 20 students.
Neckles Appointed Long-Term Substitute
Carrie Neckles has been appointed to work as a long-term substitute English language arts teacher at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. She will serve through approximately January 5, 2014.
Ms. Neckles obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees at Dowling College in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Prior to coming to Huntington she worked at William Floyd Middle School (2007-2011) and Roosevelt Children’s Academy (2011-2014).
District officials reviewed 12 applications and pre-screened and interviewed six candidates prior to recommending Ms. Neckles for appointment.
