Towers Notches Personal Best in
LI Marathon 5K

Connor Towers doesn’t get intimidated very easily. The J. Taylor Finley Middle School eighth grader keeps his mind on his goal. That ability helped him finish tenth overall out of 609 runners in the RXR Long Island Marathon weekend 5K in Garden City.

Mr. Towers competed in the adult division. The race kicked off on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard and finished on the Mitchel Athletic Complex track that was used during the 1998 Goodwill Games.

The Finley eighth grader completed the race in a time of 19:58 for pace of 6:26 per mile. Mr. Towers placed third in the 13-19 year old age category. He was the youngest participant in the group.

While this was not the teenager’s first 5K ever, it did mark his fastest performance over that distance. Mr. Towers is quite an athlete. He swims six times a week and competes on Team Suffolk. He has also captured first place in several triathlons.

Swimming does take up much of Mr. Towers’ time, with training before and after school and meets on many weekends. But, he’s also a hardworking and dedicated student, too. The teenager is a member of Finley’s Junior National Honor Society chapter, plays with the honors band and ran with the Falcon’s cross country team last fall.

Mr. Towers’ classmates and friends describe him as “very considerate, humble and always available to help others.” Principal John Amato wholeheartedly agrees.

“Finley is very proud of Connor and wishes him continued success in the future,” Mr. Amato said.
