Application Period Opens for Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School

Applications for student enrollment in Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School for the 2015/16 school year are now being accepted. Currently in its second year of operation, the school has 281 students spread across grades three through six.

The STEM school offers an emphasis on the teaching of science, technology, engineering and math, along with traditional elementary school subjects, including reading, writing, social studies, music, art and physical education. Rae Montesano serves as the school’s principal.

“The school provides an option for those students who might be interested in a program schedule that centers on the STEM disciplines and provides an uninterrupted block for science/engineering daily,” Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky said.

Students currently enrolled in the school will maintain their seats in next year’s grade four, five and six classes. Students on the 2014/15 waiting list will be given priority for open seats in grades four, five and six, but must reapply for the 2015/16 school year by the February 1 deadline. If seats remain, students will be selected from this year’s applicant pool via lottery.

Students applying to join the incoming third grade class will be selected via a lottery, with an equal number of students from each of the district’s four primary school attendance zones. More than 300 students applied for admission to the school for the current academic year.

A letter to parents about the application procedures and a copy of the actual application for 2015/16 can be viewed or downloaded by clicking on the following link: http://www.hufsd.edu/schools/jack_abrams/ja_files.html.

A scanned copy of the completed application should be submitted via e-mail to HUFSDStemMagnet@hufsd.edu or mailed to: Huntington UFSD, P.O. Box 1500, Huntington, NY 11743 Attn: STEM Application. The district will acknowledge receipt of all applications shortly after they are received.

An informational meeting will be held for parents and students on Monday, December 15 at 7 p.m. in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium. The evening will include several presentations as well as a tour of the facility. A question and answer session will also be held.
